"Large Abstraction, Black, White and A Little Red" Oil Paint Expressionist Bold

2015

About the Item

"Black, White & a Little Red," Oil on Canvas, 36 x 36 Inches, is a gorgeous and lush abstraction, very expressionist and fluid in style in black, white and red. There are 2 very related works available in the same 36" x 36" size (also in black, white, and red) which offers the possibility of this work being sold individually, or as a diptych or triptych. Holt has an exquisite sense of color and a masterful touch, these works shimmer and sparkle. The paint surface is heavy impasto. This painting is unframed, the sides are white. There are also numerous related works from this series in a wide variety of colors which measure 8" x 8", 30" x 30" and 36" x 36" so these groupings are also a possibility for installations. Holt considers all these paintings as studies for works that can be commissioned in any size. "Linda Holt: Abstractions" will be on view at the Beth Urdang Gallery in Boston from September 21 - October 27, 2018. Linda Holt was raised in Philadelphia and lived in England, Alabama and Virginia before attending the Paris American High School and graduating from Skidmore College with a BS in fine art in 1970. She received an MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied with Neil Welliver. Holt’s paintings have been seen in 19 one-person exhibitions, over 50 group exhibitions, and in addition to numerous private collections, Holt’s paintings are included in many public collections including the Wichita Center for the Arts, Wellington Management, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Fidelity Investments, Mass General Hospital, and the Seaport and Reef Hotels. Selected reviews include articles in “The Boston Globe,” “Art New England,” and the “Houston Chronicle.” Holt was awarded the Nathaniel Saltonstall Purchase Prize in Drawing, has been a Trustee and Visiting Artist at Montserrat College, a Guest Critic at FIT in New York, and a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. The artist resides on the North Shore of Massachusetts and has been represented by the Beth Urdang Gallery since 1995.

Artist: Chuck Close Title: Tavern Year of Work: 1960 Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed & Dated Upper Left Dimensions: framed 31 x 25 unframed 30 x 24 Provenance: Chuck Close, Marjorie Dalton (Dear friend of Chuck), Private Collection. Tavern, is truly a rare find, an original oil on canvas, in compelling blues and grays with a touch of gold and orange. This work reveals more imagery and detail the longer one enjoys it. This painting was created during his years studying in Yale Art School, and draws different qualities to each new viewer similar to a Rorschach. Close's work is in the collections of most of the great international museums of contemporary art, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York City. and the Tate Modern in London. Artist Bio: Chuck Close – (1940-2021) an American painter, artist and photographer born in Monroe, Washington. Early childhood illnesses including a neuromuscular condition, nephritis and dyslexia were compounded later in life by a condition known as prosopagnosia (face blindness), which may have inspired him to do portraits. Most of his early, large-format portraits are based on photographs, using photorealism or hyperrealism, of family and friends, often other artists. Close often painted abstract portraits of himself and others, which hang in collections internationally. Even though a catastrophic spinal artery collapse in 1988 left him severely paralyzed, he continued to paint inspired by artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Close's first solo exhibition, held in 1967 at the University of Massachusetts Art Gallery, Amherst, featured paintings, painted reliefs, and drawings based on photographs of record covers. Being much in the mainstream of pop art, a fragment of Close's portrait of singer-songwriter Paul Simon...

  • Binyamin Basteker, The Mighty Waves , 2023 oil on canvas 60 x 80 cm
    Located in Jerusalem, IL
Binyamin Basteker The Mighty Waves, 2023 oil on canvas 60 x 80 cm 24 x 31 in Binyamin Basteker was born in Mumbai in 1953. Growing up in a family of artists, his unique talent was discovered at a very early age. He perfected the art of portraiture and color while still living in India. Following his immigration to Israel in 1969, he studied with the modern Israeli masters and was considered to be one of the promising young abstract artists of the 1980s. In the mid-1980s he became observant and ceased to exhibit his work. The artist’s inaugural solo exhibition of oil paintings entitled “Stones that Speak” set Basteker apart from the mainstream of “modern” Jewish, religious painters. Whereas in many instances the theme of the painting, whether it be the Kotel or Jerusalem or the wealth of themes available to the observant artist, becomes the goal of the artist, Basteker relates to the “theme” as the “excuse” for the painting. Basteker searches for balance and harmony in his life and translates this to color and texture and motion. Nothing is his work is arbitrary. Every stroke and splash, every line and curve contribute to the perfect composition. The artist’s selection of tools, a result of an immediate inspiration, greatly affects the application of the color and texture. His works are sophisticated and worthy of deep examination. Tremendous layers of thought and spirituality are engraved in each and every work. Yet to the casual viewer, the paintings are aesthetically pleasing on a very simplistic level. On first glance, we see a beautiful bouquet or garden. Yet as the viewer’s eye travels and dissects the composition, we might imagine a maestro conducting a symphony orchestra or a pianist’s graceful fingers dancing over the keyboard. “Jerusalem Flowers” are unique to the Holy City...
