This rare oil on wood displays all of the unique skill and painterly touch of the artist, who draws her inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds her on her home of Maui. This painting is on a curled wood box and is framed in a simple float frame, wired and ready to hang! Linda works in a printmaking style called viscosity monotype, although she is trained in the traditional form of Intaglio printmaking. Her works are a story of color and mood, She continues to paint scenes around the island of Maui and further abstracts them in her studio using the printmaking process. Often, watercolor plein aire paintings are a prelude to her original monotypes. “It’s all a process, one medium leads to the next. We create from what we know or don’t know. My paintings are who I am.” Linda also has enjoyed painting the figure for many years. Linda began a life long relationship with watercolor painting at the age of eight. Dimensions: framed 15 X 19.5 sight 12 X 16 Janet Ament De La Roche (1916-2000) was active/lived in California. She is known for Post impressionist, abstract figurative painting. This painting while clearly figurative bears the influence of the emerging Abstract expressionist movement. Janet Ament De La Roche was born in Hollywood, CA on December 31, 1916. Janet first studied in Los Angeles at Otis and Chouinard art institutes. While studying at Jepson Art Institute in 1947, she met and soon married artist, Victor Di Gesu. Janet de La Roche was often called one of the last Bohemians. She was an artist as well as an avid Flamenco dancer. The couple spent four years in Europe and further studied in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Andre Lhote Institute, and in Barcelona at Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jorge .She also studied with the artist, Ejnar Hansen. as well as with Earl Kerkam, Yves Brayer, Jean Aujame, Edouard Goerg, F.Tolles Chamberlin and George Stanley. Upon returning to California in 1956, they settled on the Monterey Peninsula and built a home in Pacific Grove. She exhibited widely and with much success, including at the Salon d'Automne (1954), the Salon des Artes Decoratifs, Museum of Modern Art, Paris, (1955), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She was the winner of the Prix Othon Friesz. His brightly-colored, light-infused, ornamental compositions bring together aspects of many modernist art movements including Fauvism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and abstraction. Della-Volpe first studied painting at the prestigious National Academy of Design before joining the Army during World War II. As a soldier, the artist saw action on Utah Beach, winning a Purple Heart, and his experiences undoubtedly affected his later artistic style. The Fauvist "coloristic exuberance" found in the works beginning in the mid 1960's, with their vibrant fuschias and yellows, seem to offset what could be an otherwise solemn tone to many of his works at the time. Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. "In the Galleries". 1960). Della-Volpe has exhibited widely throughout his career and has lectured on art at colleges, universities, and galleries across the country.
