About

Martin Canin is an American artist known for his intense color field and abstract geometric paintings. Color is freed from objective context and becomes the subject in itself. Though at first it would be easy to assimilate his paintings to the work of color field artists like Barnett Newman or Jack Bush, Canin’s large oil paint canvases maintain a distinctive lyrical aspect that separate them from pure geometry and plunge them into a subtle psychological realm. For this painting the interplay of the orange, purple, blue and green color fields is broken up by the diagonal "raining" red, pink and green segments. While at first having the impression of being in front of a geometrical painting, the viewer will slowly recognize a subtle randomness in some of the composition, giving a new perception of this lively exchange of colors. "My work has gone through many changes in the more than forty years that I have been painting and Manet’s statement* still resonates for me. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still plastic means to speak my particular expression."M.C. * To be concise in art is both necessary and elegant. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Canin received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. The following two years he studied and worked on the West Coast in Carmel, California, and in 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960. His work has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY.
