Martin Canin
Untitled - Historic Burgundy Red, and Purple Color Field Oil Painting

1970s

About the Item

This work by Martin Canin is a 30.25 x 60.25-inch horizontal color-field oil painting from the 70s. Martin Canin’s work can be linked to two 1960s movements: Color field and Op Art. Like many artists of the period, Canin focuses on the effect of large fields of color interacting on the canvas and the effect of the color combinations on the viewer. In this piece, a deep burgundy color field dialogues with green, red and purple segments on the edge of the canvas. Subtle modulations of the surface, composed of small multidirectional brushstrokes, capture the light at different angles. This work has a complementary one with one measuring exactly the same and with the main color field of a light purple color. Though at first it would be easy to assimilate Canin's paintings to the work of color field artists like Barnett Newman or Jack Bush, Canin’s large oil paint canvases maintain a distinctive lyrical aspect that separate them from pure geometry and plunge them into a subtle psychological realm. Canin states, "My work has gone through many changes in the more than forty years that I have been painting. Manet’s statement still resonates for me: To be concise in art is both necessary and elegant. Luminosity is still the goal, oil paint on canvas still the preferred medium, shape and color still the plastic means to speak my particular expression." Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1927, Martin Canin is firmly rooted in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He received his major art training at Syracuse University, where he was awarded the B.F.A. in 1951. In 1959 he went to Tokyo, Japan, where he had his first one-man show in 1960. At the end of the 60s he started teaching at the Parsons School of Design. His work is part of the Tate Gallery and the Yale University Art Gallery's permanent collection, and it has been exhibited in Europe, Japan and the United States, including several one-man shows at the historic Graham Gallery at 1014 Madison Avenue, NY. Russinof uses large brushes to create highly energized gestures that intimate various patterns and forms in architecture such as frames, cornices and baroque ceiling vaults. The paint-ings are process-based in the sense that one is aware of drips and the accretion of layers, and also flirt with their role as objects by virtue of the gesture’s relation to the painting edge. Color serves to create a window onto natural space and light, even as the forms themselves acknowledge their own framing. She often thinks in these works of Renaissance portraits where the sitter’s forearm rests on the very edge of the frame, inviting intimacy, with a tiny landscape...
