Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 110C
Located in London, GB
Robert Motherwell Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 110C 1968 Acrylic and graphite on paper 15.2 x 20.3 cms (6 x 8 ins) Robert Motherwell's Elegies series represent one of the iconic motifs of Abstract Expressionism.  Based on a 1948 ink illustration the artist executed accompanying a Harold Rosenberg poem, “A Bird for every bird,” the drawing shows the hypnotically repetitive patterning of ovoids and vertical beams.  The stark contrast of the black ink on white paper references the symbolic use of the color black by artists such as Goya, Manet and Matisse to convey death, loss, and tragedy.  Motherwell was quite affected by the turbulence of the Spanish Civil War and alludes to the Spanish republic in his Elegies. Motherwell’s plumbing the depths of poetry, history, and primordial art in the Elegies is considered a hallmark of nascent Abstract Expressionist painting in its desire to "excavate" essential imagery of mankind. Motherwell, who originally trained as a philosophy scholar and later became of the great editors of 20th century art documents, grasped very early on the crucial importance that in order to contribute meaningfully to the canon of modern art, one must create a principle of aesthetics. Through the surrealist concept of automatism, the artist finally found the creative principle that eventually governed his extraordinary artistic output and produced the Elegies, one of the most salient, immediate painterly images of 20th century abstract painting. In fact, he has alluded to the fact that each one of his Elegies begins as an automatic drawing, and certain shapes are then blocked to create the signature armature of the vertical bars and ovals. The Elegies seem to possess the power of an archetypal image, an image the mind already grasps on a subconscious level. Motherwell's play of dualities of black and white as well as other dichotomies—the geometric versus the organic, chaos versus order, death versus life—was a condition of living through a tumultuous period in American history. During an interview, he vividly recalled the 1940s as the time when society was ordered by a set of contradictions.  In Motherwell's Elegies, he not only discovered an incredibly elastic pictorial language that would communicate on multiple levels but also acknowledged these contradictions in a manner that would resonate in abstract form.  The present work served as a model for a painting, Spanish Elegy...

"Untitled, " Minnie Evans, Black Folk Art, Southern Self-Taught Visionary
By Minnie Evans
Located in New York, NY
Minnie Evans Untitled, circa 1960 Signed lower right Colored pencil, crayon and graphite on paper 12 x 9 inches Born in Long Creek, North Carolina, Minnie Evans embraced her creative sensibility late in life. On Good Friday—April 19, 1935—Evans had a vision in which a divine voice told her to “draw or die.” The result was two of her first drawings filled with “ancient writing,” repeating lines, and distinct visual registers. It was not until five years later, in 1940, that she rediscovered the drawings while cleaning her home. From that moment on, Evans conscientiously produced her signature chromatic, mythical drawings, sometimes executing as many as seven in one day as a form of religious discipline. The incessant instruction to draw guided her hand over the page and would recede as she worked—only to recur at night in her dreams. Deeply tied to her faith, Evans considered these messages gifts from God, and approached her art through the lens of Christian belief. Her drawings became exercises where she would revisit and contemplate her visual language over and over again, repeatedly addressing the same themes and motifs anew. Replete with hypnotic facial features, flora and fauna, Evans rarely diverged from these symmetrical abstractions; however, no two are identical. Evans refused to provide interpretation of her work, readily acknowledging her own mystification at its process and portent: “They are just as strange to me as they are to anybody else.” This disjuncture between creator and object is unusual in the history of art and, as a result, has led scholars to seek out evidence of her source material. Indeed, Evans may have been subconsciously influenced by her surroundings in coastal North Carolina. From 1948 until her retirement in 1974, Evans worked as the gatekeeper...

Untitled 1960s Abstract Geometric Expressionist New York Stable Gallery Drawing
Located in Surfside, FL
Al Dickstein New York school Abstract Geometric work. Came in with small collection of his work including signed letters and a signeed card and some monogrammed pieces.. Signed with monogram and inscribed and signed verso. Showed at New York's Stable Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, New York Kept a studio at 31 Coenties Slip, formerly Fred Mitchell’s art workshop, overlooking the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge, between Wall Street and the Battery. A number of important artists have studios on the Slip: Ellsworth Kelly at 3-5, Jack Youngerman and his wife Delphine Seyrig the actress at 27, Leonore Tawney, the weaver at 27, Agnes Martin also at 27 and 3-5, John Kloss the designer at 3-5, Alvin Dickstein at 25. Cy Twombly paints his last show at the Stable Gallery in Robert Indiana studio at 31, and Gerald Laing paints his first American works in Indiana’s next building at 25. The Stable Gallery, originally located on West 58th Street in New York City, was founded in 1953 by Eleanor Ward. The Stable Gallery hosted early solo New York exhibitions for artists including Robert Indiana and Andy Warhol. Eleanor Ward had received much encouragement for her gallery from important figures such as Christian Dior, and by the mid 1950s the Stable Gallery would begin to annually host a homage exhibit to the “9th Street Art Exhibition” of 1951 where Ward would bring forth notable Abstract Expressionist artists including Willem de Kooning, Phillip Guston, Varujan Boghosian, Howard Kanovitz, Franz Kline, Nicolas Carone, Knox Martin, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, Fritz Bultman, and Jack Tworkov to exhibit. The Stable Annuals represented what came to be known as the New York School abstract expressionists of the 1950s. However, the first and second generation Abstract Expressionist artists began to go in their own directions, and new art movements in 1960s including Pop art would become more currently fashionable. In light of those developments Ward expanded the gallery beyond having only a permanent stable of artists, and began bringing forth artists of various movements to exhibit, including: Joseph Cornell, Varujan Boghosian, Edward Dugmore, John Ferren, Ian Hornak, Alex Katz, Lowell Nesbitt, Conrad Marca-Relli, Edward Dugmore, Marisol Escobar, Joan Mitchell, Isamu Noguchi, Larry Rivers, Richard Stankiewicz, Cy Twombly, Jack Tworkov, Will Insley...
