The Art Students League, NYC
Ralph Eugene Della-Volpe's semi-abstract paintings of often simplified, minimalist, beach scenes and anonymous portraits "convey profound awareness of mood and character", and his paintings are hardly as literal as they may first appear (Arts Magazine. "New York Exhibitions". 1965). His brightly-colored, light-infused, ornamental compositions bring together aspects of many modernist art movements including Fauvism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and abstraction. Della-Volpe first studied painting at the prestigious National Academy of Design before joining the Army during World War II. As a soldier, the artist saw action on Utah Beach, winning a Purple Heart, and his experiences undoubtedly affected his later artistic style. The Fauvist "coloristic exuberance" found in the works beginning in the mid 1960's, with their vibrant fuschias and yellows, seem to offset what could be an otherwise solemn tone to many of his works at the time. Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. "In the Galleries". 1960). Della-Volpe has exhibited widely throughout his career and has lectured on art at colleges, universities, and galleries across the country. He was included in the show Abstraction: 1950-1970 at Taylor Graham, Greenwich CT. Fire Dreaming
Located in Miami, FL
Paddy Japaljarri Sims was born in about 1917 at Kunajarray (Mt Nicker), south-west of Yuendumu at a site where a number of Dreaming tracks interconnect. When he died in 2010 in Yuendumu. He left behind his wife Bessie Nakamarra, his seven children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Paddy sometimes worked in collaboration with his wife, who was an acclaimed artist in her own right. His wife lived in Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. She died in 2012. Paddy lived in his country as a young, single man. Back then Warlpiri people wore hair string belts that they had made. When Japaljarri was young he worked sawing mulga trees for wood and for fuel for fires.
Later Paddy became involved with gardening and farming in the Yuendumu district. This included growing watermelons, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes and other vegetables. The farming was at Four Mile Bore where they had chickens, pigs, ducks and other animals. All his life he hunted for goanna, kangaroo, emu and other animals each day for bush tucker and Paddy passed on his hunting knowledge to many young men in the community. This also led him to working at the Yuendumu school teaching Jukurrpa (Dreaming), painting, hunting, traditional dancing, bush tucker and helping out on excursions 'out bush' as well as to Alice Springs and Darwin.
Paddy Painted with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre, for a long time. In 1988 Paddy Sims was selected by The Power Gallery, Sydney University to travel to Paris with five other Warlpiri men from Yuendumu to create a ground painting installation at the exhibition 'Magiciens de la Terre' at the Centre Georges Pompidou. The trip took place in May 1989 and the painting was received with world-wide acclaim.
Paddy was also one of the senior male artists who worked on the Yuendumu Doors. In 2000 Paddy Japaljarri Stewart undertook to produce 30 etchings of the original Yuendumu Doors in collaboration with Paddy Japaljarri Sims and under the guidance of Basil Hall, Northern Editions Printmaker (Northern Territory University). The first print of the etchings was all on one page and had its debut alongside the Yuendumu Doors when they were exhibited in Alice Springs.
The etchings in a set were launched in 2001, to great acclaim with the set winning the Telstra, 16th National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, for works on paper. Paddy has painted and exhibited regularly with Warlukurlangu Artists both nationally and internationally since 1985. Japaljarri's Jukurrpa stories or Dreamings include Yiwarra (Milky Way), Ngarlkirdi/Warna (witchety grub/snake), Warlu Kukurrpa (fire), and Yanjirlpirri (star).
In his early work he often chose to work in tones of blue, pink and purple but later used traditional iconography and an unrestricted palette to develop a modern individualist style to depict his traditional Jukurrpa. His work has been included in numerous general exhibitions of Aboriginal art including Dreaming: The Art of Aboriginal Australia, The Asia Society Galleries, New York, 1988; The Continuing Tradition, Australian National Gallery, Canberra, 1989; Mythscapes: Aboriginal Art of the Desert...

By the Beach, Oil on Canvas Painting by André Hambourg
Located in Atlanta, GA
This elegant oil on mounted canvas is by André Hambourg (France, 1909-1999) and features a seaside composition. The artwork is signed in the bottom left corner. The landscape is a lovely pastel color composition, by the beach, on the French Atlantic coast nearby Cabourg or Deauville.
Newly framed with a gray and green ceruse wood frame and a blue canvas matte.
Measurements:
With frame: 22.82 in. wide (58 cm) x 19.32 in. high (49 cm).
Opening: 16.13 in. wide (41 cm) x 12.63 in. high (32 cm).
About:
André Hambourg was born in Paris on 5 May 1909. Entering the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in 1926, he studied sculpture under Paul Niclausse for four years. The young artist then entered the studio of Lucien Simon at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. While in the middle of his academic studies, Hambourg had his debut solo exhibition at the Galerie Taureau in Paris in 1928. He was only 19 years old. Because of the early recognition of his talent, Hambourg became active in major Paris salons in the first stages of his fledgling career. In 1931, he was made a member of the Salon de l’Art Français Indépendant and the Salon de l’Oeuvre Unique.
The first of Hambourg’s many honors was the Prix de la Villa Abd-el-Tif, awarded in 1933. As a result, the artist traveled to North Africa for the first time and spent nearly ten years working in Algeria and Morocco.
The strong light of the sun, and the bleak poverty of this region, inspired Hambourg’s works. In 1937, he executed a large mural for the Algerian Pavilion at the Exposition Internationale of Paris. Throughout his years in North Africa, Hambourg would exhibit his paintings in numerous solo exhibitions in Algeria and Paris.
In 1939, Hambourg was mobilized as a military reporter and draughtsman and worked on the staff of the Journal de Commissariat a la Guerre, the newspaper of the French army, under the pseudonym Andre Hache. Special missions on combat vessels led to his appointment as a war correspondent in 1944 with the staff of inter-allied SHAEF.
As such, he participated in the campaigns of Germany, Alsace, the Atlantic front, and the Liberation of France.
After returning to his artistic career for a short time, Hambourg became the official painter of the Navy in 1952. He undertook numerous voyages aboard French Navy vessels on missions worldwide, including Venice, the Soviet Union, Israel, Great Britain, The Ivory Coast, The United States, and Mexico. From these extended trips, the artist brought back numerous sketches and preparatory drawings for future paintings and illustrations.
His international trips would have a lasting influence on his artwork. Hambourg’s adventurous maritime career resulted in his receiving the honor of Laureate of the Salon de la Marine and becoming the official painter of the Marine Ministry.
In 1970, five hundred of his works created a prestigious retrospective at the Maison de Culture in Bourges, France. Other notable shows include Drawings of Venice...

Auguste Herbin
1882-1960 French
Aoum II
Signed and dated 'herbin 1944' (lower right); titled "aoum" 2 (lower left)
Oil on canvas
This bold and vivid abstract oil on canvas was painted by French painter Auguste Herbin, a pioneer in popularizing Modernist abstraction. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque before honing his personal and innovative style. Entitled Aoum II, the painting stands apart for its daring color palette and crisp composition.
Painted in 1944, Aoum II embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. Only two years prior to its creation, Herbin developed his “alphabet plastique,” a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, one does not need to perfectly understand his principles to feel Aoum II's magnetism. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily fragmented triangles and circles — are rendered in bold pinks, blues and yellows on a deep black background. His tiered application of color creates a natural three-register visual effect as if to tell a story from the apex of the form to its denouement.
Auguste Herbin began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille before moving to Paris in 1901. In the early years of his career, he experimented with a variety of styles, exhibiting Post-Impressionistic works at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906 and Fauvist paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1907. After a brief Cubist period following his introduction to Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Otto...

Le Paysage, French scene
Located in Greenwich, CT
Painted in 1961 in the south of France, Le Paysage's jewel tones and energetic, thick brushwork lure you into not a literal landscape of paint and asks you to discern it's true content. It has charm, expressiveness, abstracted content and idiosyncratic nature! A delight to hang in a smaller intimate spot. The framing is carefully done with silvered 24 karat leafing around the float area of the frame and then a wide panel to allow the viewer to focus in on the composition itself and the texture of the paint.

Ukrainian Israeli Woman Bezalel Artist 1947 Palestine Landscape Oil Painting

Abstract landscape, oil painting
This is hand signed lower right dated 1947
There is also a hand written inscription in french lower left.
Moussia Toulman ( 1903-1997), Artist and poet, was born in Uman Ukraine (famed as the tomb site of Chassidic Rebbe Nachman of Breslov) and came to Israel (British mandate Palestine) when she was 19 years old. Just a few months after her arrival she married, settled in Metula however, she didn’t forgo her ambition to study art. In 1923 she enrolled to study at the Bezalel Art Institute in Jerusalem and completed her studies there in 1926. Like Ziona Tagar, who preceded her a few years earlier, Moussia Toulmann chose to become an artist-woman in the full significance of the term. She wasn’t satisfied with the local studies framework that was available and chose to continue her studies in Paris, France which at that time was considered the art capital.
From 1929 onwards Musia lived in Paris, studied art and joined the ‘Independent Salon’ society. She made contacts with artists and writers and exhibited during the 1930’s in a number of select group exhibitions.
In 1936 Tolman visited Israel and forged bonds with artists she studied with at Betzalel, among them Aharon Avni, Gliksberg and Avigdor Stematsky. She exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 1936 in a group exhibition with Aharon Avni, Arie Aroch, Yosef Zaritsky, Mordechai Levanon, Eliyahu Sigad, Chaya Schwartz, and Yehezkel Streichman. She painted landscapes and portraits and presented one of the works she painted in Paris to the Tel Aviv museum. It was a portrait of the poet and art critic Gustave Kahn who had died the same year. Moussia returned to Paris and exhibited a one-man show just before the outbreak of the Second World War. During the war all the works she exhibited in this exhibition were lost without a trace and Moussia Toulman herself wandered around France moving from one hiding place to another. After the war, in 1946 Moussia Toulman continued painting but was reluctant to exhibit her works. She became a well-known public figure and volunteered for aid programmes for Holocaust survivors, especially orphans. Later on she founded together with Mane Katz, Jacques Atlan and other artists the ‘Art’ organization with the object of developing cultural ties with Israel and to aid Israeli artists during their stay in Paris.
In addition to painting Moussia Toulman wrote poetry, published articles and was involved in art criticism. She was included in the rare publication of 'Association des artistes, peintres et sculpteurs juifs de France' in French and Yiddish. The School of Paris Jewish artists included Edmond Kayser, Abram Krol, Meyer Lazar, David Lan-Bar, Jacques Lipchitz, Jacques Loutchansky, Lubitch, Rene Mendes-France, Adolphe Milich, Lea Nikel, Jules Pascin, David Peretz, Camille Pissarro, Nathan Rapoport, Moussia Toulman, Roger Worms...
