conte and gouache on paper, framed

Having grown fond of the pared down vocabulary of line, form, and color, Robert Kelly assembles work with a formal approach. As a seasoned traveler to exotic locations, Kelly finds and gathers imagery and material. He uses antique botanical drawings, handwritten notes, small sketches, vintage posters, and signs to create the geometric foundation for his paintings; laying and gluing strips of found papers to form irregular grids and small patterns. This repeated application obscures the printed and written content beyond recognition. To further complicate the collaged grounds, Kelly paints geometric shapes and meandering lines across them. His simple visual vocabulary allows the layering and juxtaposition of material, color, and texture to show the history of his process and decision-making.
His work is included in the public collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Margulies Collection in Miami, The Fogg Museum at Harvard, The McNay Museum of Art, University of New Mexico Art Museum, Smith College Art Museum, and the Milwaukee Art Museum, among many others.
