About the Item

Raising Waters is inspired by the shifting color reflecting off the water at various times of the day, as fleeting as it is hard to capture. It’s about time and place; specificity and surrender. Toren explores the concept of color fields combined with surface interest. She sculpts and reworks each section to appear independent and at the same time in harmony with the adjoining sections. “A body of water such as an ocean has no color of its own but emits blue to us.” Shira Toren’s work is perfect for any modern home, from the traditional or modern home to the organic, mid-century, and coastal, her paintings' surfaces and textures add a rich and elegant look to any space. Venetian plaster, pigment on Canvas, 2019 36x30 USA weight 8 Lb Artist Statement: My work is to make unconscious emotion visceral. I implement a process-oriented approach in my practice, which uncovers the works' themes as much as establishes them. I apply Venetian plaster, graphite powder and mineral pigments, accumulating these materials to achieve a nuanced sense of texture. Layers of material converge in abstract monochrome forms, creating a luminal space where pigments build and collapse. The various built surfaces in my work seemingly excavate elusive memories and their very nature. The final compositions embody this subtle conflict: a latent tension lingering between presence and absence, the rigid and the malleable. About the artist: Shira Toren is an American-Israeli Visual Artist. Born in Tel-Aviv, she moved to New York City to study fine art and design. Toren received her BFA from the Pratt Institute and An Associate Degree in Art Therapy from The New School. She Attended classes in Painting and Printmaking at The Art Students League, NYC. Her work explores personal and global themes that reflect upon the environment. The Abstract Monochromatic paintings are process oriented. Using an eclectic method, uniquely developed by Toren, she rubs graphite powder, pigments and ink on to Venetian plaster substrates. Ms. Toren is currently working at her studios in Brooklyn. Toren’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and internationally.
