About the Item

Titled: Chants. Hand signed and dated. Sonja Kuhfahl (1928-) is a German born woman artist. She began her art career studying fashion design in Europe, and after raising a family in the USA, has been exploring fine art painting and collage for more than 35 years. Building upon her free and loose style in watercolor, which she developed with Nicholas Reale, Sonja was inspired to explore acrylics as a member of Edward Betts master class workshop in Maine in the 1980s. Her use of transparent and opaque passages, glazes, and impasto, along with gilding with gold foil or gold leafing, yield a body of complex surfaces and texture to create luminosity in her paintings. She has been painting now for 35 years, has had eighteen one-woman shows, was in 120 juried shows, and has over fifty awards, including two Grumbacher Gold Medallions and one Silver Medallion. Professional memberships include: National Society of Painters in Casein & Acrylic, National Collage Society, and Lorillard Wolf Art Club. Sonja’s mixed media paintings are built slowly: layer upon layer, color upon color, she manipulates surfaces through various means, creating texture and mystery. Sonja Kuhfahl’s work has appeared in more than 120 juried and invitational exhibitions. She is a signature Member of the National Collage Society, Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic. • Large Abstract Expressionist Taiwanese Painting Chihung Yang Chinese Art
    Located in Surfside, FL
Chihung Yang American (b. 1947) Untitled (Black and Brown Composition) (1986) Mixed media (acrylic, pastel) on paper Hand signed lower right Sheet 38 x 50 inches, frame dimensions: 45 x 57 x 2 inches, wood frame with glazing Provenance:= From a Corporate Art Collection Yang Chihung (Chinese: 楊識宏; pinyin: Yang Chihung; born 1947) Taiwanese-American artist. Yang Chi-hung was born on 25 October 1947, in Chungli, Taiwan. He developed an interest in art in early childhood, and found inspirations to pursue an artist career after reading Lust for Life – The Life of Vincent van Gogh, translated by poet Yu Kuang-chung, in junior high school. Between 1965 and 1968, he attended the National Taiwan College of Art, developing a sound foundation in oil painting under the tutelage of famous Taiwanese artists of the Japanese Colonial period, such as Liao Chi-chun, Li Mei-shu and Yang San-lang. Meanwhile, he actively attended events organized by the modern art groups of Taiwan, namely the Fifth Moon Group and Ton Fan Group, only to find himself both intimidated and dissatisfied with the then relatively conservative art environment in Taiwan. In 1979, he emigrated to the United States of America with his wife, Jane, and their son, Daniel. His pioneering works soon landed him the “Outstanding Asian-American Artist” award. The concept and style of abstract expressionism as represented by the works of Jackson Pollock in the 1950s had great impact on Yang’s work. With the sense of nihilism that gave rise to abstract expressionism in the post-war period, artists no longer clamored to depict the external environment, but rather chose to focus on their own inner experience. Yang Chihung embraced this spirit about the early 1990s when his style turned abstract. In 1984–85 and again in 1985–86, he was twice awarded a year's residency at The Clocktower Studio in New York City by MoMA P.S.1. In 2013, Yang, along with Xu Bing, Zhang Huan, and Li Chen, were the four artists featured in the Discovery Channel Asia documentary series, Chineseness, a multi-series production that focused on postwar Chinese contemporary artists. (144.8 x 83.8 x 58.4cm) Provenance: Malcolm Forbes collection The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism. Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. Most recently, Munk has been producing a series of paintings which tackle the subject of art itself through a historical and diagrammatic lens.
