Sophia Milligan
'Silk, Blood and Thorns'. Red Roses. Blue, white contemporary painting framed

2018

About the Item

'Silk, Blood and Thorns' Original Artwork. Framed, ready to hang ___________________________________ "But he, that dares not grasp the thorn, should never crave the rose." - Anne Bronte (The Narrow Way, 1848) When two opposites exist together, the dichotomy stands in harmony, creating balance and beauty. The painting is a contemplation of the balance in all things: of strength and fragility; in love and sadness; of the ephemeral and the enduring. Wrapped in the ancient symbolism of floriography, the rose buds represent innocence and youth, while the bold vibrancy of the red rose, bursting from among the thorns, speaks of desire, beauty, passion, and protection. 'Silk, Blood and Thorns' is from an evolving body of work titled 'Elemental' in which Sophia employs her unique style of working using the four elements of nature. 'It is a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected'. The physical plein air process of creating this painting captures the tangible moment when the primary forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: A painting scratched and scarred by the caress of stems, leaves, thorns and silken petals; then to be washed, bathed, and revealed: tactile memories, intrinsically embedded. ___________________________________ Mixed media painting on board, with deep, rich blue and white tones of cyanotype solution used as a painting medium, together with vibrant colours of richly layered acrylic ink. 28.5 x 20cm / 11.2 x 7.8 inches (Framed 47.7 x 38.8 cm / 18.8 x 15.3 inches) Signed in pencil to the lower right corner; studio label, signed and titled to verso. Float-mounted, framed & glazed (Hand finished Italian hardwood frame). Ready to Hang Please note that images in situ are an indication of how the artwork can look hung alongside a similar artwork from this series. The artwork is being sold framed, though can be purchased unframed for framing of your choice, please contact. ___________________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. Sophia's works have an affinity with the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi sabi, and with resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, she illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago. ___________________________________ Modern .
