About

2016, Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 36 in. D’Onofrio embraces popular imagery as a means to critique it. He introduces the idea of painting as ornament; stock objects such as landscape, still-life, and portraiture become knickknacks. This process began for the artist as a way to sort out his own mixed feelings about kitsch—to preserve a sense of nostalgia inside the banal without resorting to outright commentary. His humorous take begins with D’Onofrio’s self-held edict that paintings are 3D objects. This aligns with the ready-made, mass-produced, pre-framed paintings you find in consumer-grade design stores and the feeling of incompleteness that comes from disregarding the edges of paintings. Stephen D’Onofrio received his MFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Most recently, He showed at The Stolbun Collection in Chicago and was featured in the national publication “New American Painting.” Recipient of the 2012 Hungarian Multicultural Center Residency, D’Onofrio has shown at Art Villa Gallery, Budapest, and was previously shown at Galleri Urbane in 2016’s Paintings, Process, Materials, Textures show.
