About the Item

Susan English Travel, 2021 tinted polymer on aluminum composite 24 x 91 in. (eng122) At the core of Susan English's work are the ideas of space, boundaries, and perception. The periphery is defined as the outer limit or the edge of a place or an object – a dropping off point. English is drawn to the expansive spaces where the horizon is seen as an edge, one that might be perceived only indirectly or unconsciously. The artist exhibits with Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City. The works range of color represents an intersection of the inside and the outside, as well as the limits of color. How far can green be pushed before it becomes blue? How many infinite directions can you push a brown or a gray or a white? A vibrancy and subtle hum of energy is created in the peripheral area between hues, and in the moments where the color is it’s most concentrated. The exploration of space both conscious and subconscious, where the known meets the unknown is a driving force behind the work in Periphery. English utilizes a process of poured polymer, though working in aluminum panel for a number of the works. The poured polymer mimics nature: a layer of polymer hardens like ice or mud —its thickness and viscosity impacting how the surface dries. The variations on the surface and the quality of the color are the result of a delicate and flexible relationship between control and accident.
