Víctor Valera Umbria, 1975 Polychromed wood and vinyl 68 x 68 x 10 cm 26.7 x 26.7 x 3.9 in. Signed in back. Victor Valera was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1927. In 1941, he registered in the School of Arts of this city. In 1945 he moved to Caracas and entered the School of Pictorial and Applied Arts. In 1952 he traveled to Paris to work at Jean Dewasne’s and Victor Vasarely’s ateliers. He also worked with Fernand Léger. In 1955 he took part in the Arts Integration Project led by architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva in the Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas. From 1984 to 1985 he became a member of the Commission in charge of the creation of the Armando Reverón Institute. He lived and worked in Caracas. From 1953, date of his first Paris show, he carried out a vast number of individual and collective, painting and sculpture exhibitions in different museums, salons, national and international art fairs, private institutions halls, galleries, universities, in his own country as well as in Colombia, Brazil, United States, Spain, Belgium, and China. Victor Valera is one of the most acknowledged artists in his country. He earned the National Prize for sculpture in 1958. He also received medals, buttons, plates, orders and twice was appointed Doctor Honoris Causa, in 2002 by the Cecilio Acosta Catholic University of Maracaibo and in 2009 by the Central University of Venezuela.
