Roger Lersy, French (1920 - 2004) Oil on canvas Signed, R. Lersy, dated 1961 lower right Measuring 35 X 31 Matted and framed. sight 26 X 21.5 Roger Lersy was born in Paris, France 1920, in the rough neighborhood surrounding Place Pigalle. His youth was marked by extreme poverty. Lersy studied art and music at the École des Arts Apppliqués. He was a painter, lithographer and musician-composer He belongs to the École de Paris and was a member in the movement of the Young Painting. By 1946, when he first exhibited in Paris, Lersy became one of the founders of the School of Paris’ New Graphic School. Lersy received the Prix des Amateurs d’Art in 1953, the Shell Prize in 1954 and the Grand Prize of the City of Marseilles in 1953. Lersy could be defined as a Baroque expressionist. For Bernard Dorival, Roger Lersy is along with Gabriel Dauchot, Jean Commère and Raymond Guerrier among "the most noted champions of this expressionism which is part of the continuation of Bernard Buffet's miserabilism". Prof. Richardson is the Chair of the Department of Art, he received his MFA degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and his BFA degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He joined the faculty at Maryland in 1978 and has maintained a professional focus on abstract painting and contemporary art theory. His work has been featured in 21 solo and over 100 group exhibitions in museums, galleries, and art centers in Washington, DC, New York, NY, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Missouri, Ohio, Georgia, Minnesota, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and internationally in Brussels, Russia, Jordan and Algiers. His work is currently represented by G Fine Art in Washington DC. Past gallery affiliations include Fusebox in Washington DC, and Baumgartner Gallery in DC and NY. Richardson has received numerous grants and awards for his work, including five Maryland State Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowships. Commissioned artwork is permanently installed at Ronald Reagan National Airport and Reston Town Center in Virginia. His work is held in numerous public and corporate collections, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (DC), the Corcoran Gallery of Art (DC), the Ackland Art Center (NC), the U.S. Department of State (Algiers), the District of Columbia Town Hall, Prudential Life (NY), IBM Corporation (DC), Richmond Federal Reserve Bank (VA), Washington Post Corporation (DC), Northrop-Grumman (VA), and Reston Town Center (VA). Richardson’s exhibitions have been reviewed in Art In America, Artforum International, ARTnews, NYArts Magazine, The Art Papers, The New Art Examiner, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Baltimore Sun, The Richmond Times Dispatch, The El Paso Times, The Winston-Salem Journal, and The Washington City Paper, among others. Essays and monographs on his work have been published in many exhibition brochures and catalogues. This piece is done in a sort of sgraffito technique with the flowers sort of etched in the paint. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Nobu Fukui Came to New York where he became a US citizen. From 1964 - 65, he studied at the Art Students League in New York City. His work has been widely exhibited in New York and California. He had his first one-man show in this country in 1965 at the Daniels Gallery in New York. That same year his works were included in the Japanese Artists in Europe and America Exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. This was followed by numerous exhibits and one-man shows in various cities in the United States and Japan - New York, Indianapolis, Ann Arbor, Pittsburgh and Yokohama, for example. Fukui's works are formal, dynamic and abstract. Form functions minimally as a symmetrical structure so as to focus on his real interest in color interaction. Through his paintings, he reasserts that abstraction has been a part of humanity, all cultures in all ages. It’s an indispensable tool, as we create symbols, vessels to fill with allusions and messages. The resulting artwork have a strong sense of purpose. Each painting contains hundreds of hand coloured trapezoid shapes, hand drawn with a sharp blade onto silver or gold leaf. Each coloured shape can be interpreted to represent an ‘atomic’ element. On its own a block of colour is insignificant but seen as part of a whole it becomes dynamic and alive reflecting on how nature works. The phenomena of light is also important to the work.
