André Cottavoz
New Gardens, French countryside

1964

About the Item

This major and stunningly expressive work of the French Countryside is a work Andre Cottavoz put a lot into! It is extraordinarily thick paint that is a bit awe inspiring. Done in the tradition of Vincent Van Gogh but Cottavoz made thick paint a hall mark of his career too and is highly loved for it. The painting is an intriguing mix of a mountainous view that is highly abstracted at the same time where the paint directions are a part of the composition. It is framed in a modern specially designed frame that has a 18 karat leafed silvered rim and combed gesso panel all done by hand. The painting measure 29 x 39 inside the frame so our listed size is the total dimension.

    By André Cottavoz
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Painted in 1961 in the south of France, Le Paysage's jewel tones and energetic, thick brushwork lure you into not a literal landscape of paint and asks you to discern it's true content. It has charm, expressiveness, abstracted content and idiosyncratic nature! A delight to hang in a smaller intimate spot. The framing is carefully done with silvered 24 karat leafing around the float area of the frame and then a wide panel to allow the viewer to focus in on the composition itself and the texture of the paint. Andre Cottavoz is very well noted artist of the French and Paris school of art...
