The style was very popular from 1820-1880 and many great folk paintings were painted during this period. This is a very nice example of one such piece. The mother sheep and baby lamb are expertly painted and have a wonderful folk feel. The 19th century was a period of significant artistic growth and development, including the realm of folk art. Folk art refers to artwork created by self-taught or untrained artists who were often part of rural or working-class communities. During this time, folk art paintings in England often depicted scenes from everyday life, landscapes, and historical events. Folk art from this period often expressed the values, traditions, and cultural identity of the working class and rural communities, providing a glimpse into the lives and experiences of everyday people. The piece is framed in a wonderful Antique English maple frame with sets off the painting well.
