Georgina Lara
The Village Inn Victorian Oil Painting Gilt Framed Many Figures Chickens & Dog

c.1870's

About the Item

"The Tavern" by Georgina Lara (active 1862-1971) oil painting on canvas, framed painting: 9 x 13 inches framed: 13 x 17 inches Delightful Victorian oil painting by the very popular and widely admired painter, Georgina Lara (active between 1862-1971). Not only is the work of excellent quality but it depicts a wonderful insight into the social history of Victorian Britain. Villagers are out in full force enjoying what looks to be a warm late afternoon, perhaps on their way home from work and labour. The landlord (Mr. G. Hobbs) serves a rider on horseback, whilst to the far right an elderly gentleman passes by. Chickens and a dog bound around, hoping for scraps to come their way and all is well with the world! The details within the composition are superb - not only to the individual figures and animals but also to the building and tavern itself in particular, with its timber frame and latticed windows. A painter of farmyard and village scenes, Georgina Lara exhibited at the British Institution as well as exhibiting sixteen works at Suffolk Street. Very little in fact is known about her life. Her work is sometimes attributed to Edward Masters, whose style is very similar to her own. Lara’s work is noted for her putting large numbers of doll like figures into her paintings and setting them in country and village scenes where they are going about their daily chores and duties. As a rural idyll we might all like to emulate today, the artist’s work remains very collectable. Condition report: The painting is in overall very good and presentable condition, bar a very small flecks of paint loss which are barely noticeable. It is well presented in this ornate frame with name plaque to the frame.

In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.
