Alfred Wheeler
Horse head portrait oil painting of the racehorse Sunstar

1911

About the Item

Alfred Wheeler British, (1852-1932) Sunstar Oil on board, signed & dated 1911 Image size: 9.25 inches x 9.75 inches Size including frame: 14.75 inches x 15.25 inches A beautifully detailed horse head portrait of the racehorse Sunstar by Alfred Wheeler. The portrait shows the horse with a braided mane looking slightly towards the viewer to reveal the small star mark on his forehead. Sunstar was a thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1908 out of Doris and sired by Sundridge. He was described as a medium sized dark bay and was bred by his owner Jack B Joel. As a two year old he won three of his six races in 1910. In 1911 he won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Epsom Derby ridden by Georges Stern. His owner Jack B Joel most likely commissioned Wheeler to paint the portrait in order to mark the occasion. Alfred Wheeler was born in Cheltenham in 1852, the middle child of the artist John Alfred Wheeler (1821-1903) and his wife Eliza (née Coate). His older brother James Thomas Wheeler (1849-1888) was also an artist. When he was still young, his family moved from Cheltenham to Walcot in Bath where he was baptised along with his younger sister Amelia in 1860. Wheeler inherited his talent for painting from his father who taught him to paint and greatly influenced his style and subject matter. Like his father, he specialised in sporting art painting horses as well as dogs and often received commissions from important patrons including the Prince of Wales, Baron Rothschild and Lord Rosebery. They were known to work closely together with Alfred contributing to his father’s paintings towards the end of his life. As well as signing his works ‘A Wheeler’ he also signed his works ‘J A Wheeler’ which has sometimes led to his works being confused with that of his father. In 1874, Wheeler married Catherine Muspratt and they lived next door to his father at Raglan Villas in Bath. Two of their children, Walter Herbert (1868-1960) and John Frederick (1875-1930) also became artists. By the early 1880’s, he had moved with his family to 3 Ivy Cottages in the Hanwell area of London, close to Ealing where his father had also relocated. After the death of his father in 1903, he moved to the family home at Bath Villa, 5 Manor Court Road where the studio was based. He remained living in Hanwell until his death on 27 March, 1932. Examples of his paintings can be found in various collections and museums including the National Trust and the National Horseracing Museum. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

19th Century Scottish landscape oil painting of Highland cattle at Glen Goil
By William Watson
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
William Watson Jnr British, (1847-1921) Up Glen Goil, West Highlands Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1892, further inscribed verso Image size: 23.5 inches x 35.5 inches Size including frame: 36.25 inches x 48.25 inches This highly atmospheric and well executed painting by William Watson Jnr depicts Highland Cattle watering at Glen Goil. Glen Goil is a valley area of Argyll and Bute in the West Highlands. It is situated at the junction of Hell’s Glen and Gleann Mor and has the river Goil flowing through. Located around 2 miles from Lochgoilhead, it is well known as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Watson made several trips to the Highlands and produced a number of paintings of the locality, many of which included highland cattle such as this fine example. Another painting by him of Glen Goil is held by the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s. As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists. Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen Watson (1871-1947), William Robert Charles Watson (1873-1928) and Walter James Watson...
