About the Item

“I have been drawing and painting for as long as I have memory. I received a double degree with honors in fine art and writing from St. Lawrence University in New York. In addition, I studied painting, drawing and photography at Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute of Art in Florence, Italy and by invitation for intensive residency study at La Cipressaia in Montagnana, Italy under internationally acclaimed South African artists Rose Shakinovsky and Claire Gavronsky. I have lived and painted in Taos, New Mexico and Aspen, Colorado for much of my life, but I presently live where I can walk to the salt water in Seattle, Washington with my humorous husband, our shiny son and baby girl. My young flock and I commute to Vashon Island to paint in a small studio that overlooks Quartermaster harbor and to eat lunch with a most gracious and generous woman.” Britt Freda studied and majored in both studio fine art and English writing at St. Lawrence University in New York. The combination of the two can be seen in the majority of her artwork. She chooses images and words to represent birth and rebirth, production and reproduction in the natural world. She says, “I have come to find a consciousness can be quickly filled with circles and cycles that are unraveling in the natural world. Some happen, some are happened to and some make my stomach sink with fear to think our human fix is the trip wire.” Freda likes to dissolve her images, deconstructing them at times with a tangle of circular shapes. “…I see the tangled letters falling away, unraveling string-like, recoiling and wrapping circuitously around simple shapes, seductively worthy of pause. When that happens I am happy.”
