About

A BAY COBB AND A TERRIER IN A LANDCAPE - BY CHARLES HANCOCK (1795 - 1868) Period portraits are thrilled to offer this fine and rare oil on canvas of a Bay Cobb and a Terrier in a Lansdcape. Signed Charles Hancock Pinxt and dated 1833 lower right. This is an exceptional and fine quality work by this celebrated artist. C. Hancock was an animal painter in the classic English mould who exhibited his first painting (a portrait) at the Royal Academy (in 1819 when living at 55, St. James's Street London) Then after a decade of living in various country localities the artist became imbued with SPORTING tastes! Between the years 1819 and 1847, he exhibited twenty three works at the R A, and alongside J. H. Herring, he shared the distinction of being the fashionable painter, of winning horses on the turf! The genre of equestrian art exploded into activity in England in the 19th century and its popularity shows no signs of dimming. Such paintings frequently include the passionate activities of racing, steeplechasing, foxhunting, coaching and polo. It was more popular to depict a horse in its stable, and many paintings (were produced along this theme. The breed of horse pictured here, as well as its canine companion and the sensitively rendered landscape setting, make this painting much rarer . This highly decorative sporting oil on canvas is easy to place, and ready to hang in its original mellow gold antique frame. Higher resolution images on request. Worldwide shipping available. Canvas: 18” x 22" / 46m x 56cm. Frame: 14" x 17.5" / 36cm x 45cm. Provenance: Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire, England. Internal Ref: 00090
