About

A SPANIEL BY WATER - BY DAVID DALBY (1794-1836) SIGNED AND DATED 1831. Period Portraits are pleased to present this stylish and delicately rendered study of a spaniel in a wooded landscape, by the celebrated sporting artist David Dalby of York (1794-1836) Signed and dated 1831 this painting is housed in its original early 19th century gilded frame (with Arthur Ackerman label verso) and is ready to hang and enjoy. David Dalby (1794-1836) was one of Yorkshire’s best known equine and sporting artists, he created very accurate and highly finished paintings that enjoyed great popularity throughout the nineteenth century. He lived at York, moving briefly to Leeds it is said because he offended the local sherrif with a caricature. Dalby often signed himself ‘Dalby York’ and his paintings are to be found internationally in both public and private and public collections. In ‘A Spaniel by Water’ Dalby depicts a characterful, contemplative and well kept animal (no doubt belonging to a wealthy family) in a clearing, within a romantic wooded landscape, and by water. Dalby was popular with his many patrons, for whom he painted racehorses, equestrian portraits, dogs and hunting scenes. In 1824 he produced a set of three paintings depicting ‘Lord Harewood’s Hunt’. His racehorse paintings included the St Leger winner ‘St Patrick’ and he also painted the father and son ‘Blacklock’ and ‘Velocipede’: the latter was winner of the St Leger in 1828. Dalby died in 1836 and was buried at St Michael le Belfry Church in York. Higher resolution images on request. Worldwide shipping available. Canvas : 13" x 16" / 33cm x 41cm.
