A very charming and original oil painting by the leading 20th century sporting artist, Doris Zinkeisen (1897-1991). The work is signed and is an excellent example of her work.
Doris Zinkeisen was born in Scotland, sister of Anna Zinkeisen and achieved notable fame from a young age as an artist, exhibiting a portrait of her sister Anna at the RA in 1918, painted when Doris was only 16. She studied at Harrow School of Art and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools. Her early work is characterised by a strong sense of design with rich, vibrant colours. In addition to painting Doris Zinkeisen had a very successful career as a designer of costumes and sets for the theatre and the newly emerging British film industry. Thus she became acquainted with some of the great personalities of the inter-war years, including Noel Coward, Charles Cochran, Jack Buchanan, Anna Neagle and Elsa Lanchester. This glamorous association had a dramatic impact on her work helping her to attain important commissions such as murals for the Verandah Grill on the liner Queen Mary. Doris Zinkeisen won Bronze, Silver and Gold medals at the Paris Salon. In stark contrast to her visually beautiful and stylish inter-war work Doris was also a war artist and entered Belsen in 1945, two of her paintings of Belsen hang in the Imperial War Museum.
After World War II Doris Zinkeisen cultivated a more romantic style of painting representing people in period settings, Edwardian ladies promenading along the Esplanade, or dancers on stage (sometimes Spanish flamenco or ballerinas), picnics, couples dining and many depictions of horses and carriages; these works reflect the lifestyle of her time and her love of horses. Doris herself was an accomplished horsewoman, winning the Moscow Cup for the Supreme Hack Championship at the International Horse Show in 1934. Her paintings have hung in English country houses throughout the 20th century and today are collected worldwide.

Doris Zinkeisen
Born in Clynder House in Rosneath, Argyll, Scotland, Zinkeisen attended the Harrow School of Art for four years. During the 1920s and ’30s, she shared a studio with her sister in London, where she started her career as a commercial artist, theatrical designer, and painter. During World War II, she joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade and worked as a nurse in London. Following the liberation of Europe in 1945, she was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee. After the war she continued to work in London, producing theatrical designs and occasionally exhibiting her paintings.
