About

Edmund Willis British/American, (1808-1899) Cattle Watering Oil on canvas, signed & indistinctly dated 1838(?) Image size: 17.5 inches x 23.5 inches Size including frame: 23.5 inches x 29.5 inches Edmund Aylburton Willis was born in Bristol on 12 October 1808, son of John Aylburton Willis, an artist and drawing master and Ann Brittan. Aylburton was an old family name on his father’s side. His younger brother Henry Brittan Willis (1811-1884) also became an artist. Both brothers were taught art by their father. In the 1840’s, Willis moved to London where he married Frances Fenwick on 19 October 1841. The couple lived at 19 Gloucester Street, Regents Park from where he made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1847 exhibiting as Edmund Willis. He also began travelling visiting Europe and later America in 1851 not long after his brother had also spent time there. He returned to England where he lived at 3 Osward Place, Edmonton and continued exhibiting at the Royal Academy. By 1858, he had immigrated to the US with his family, settling in the Brooklyn area of New York. He began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design and also became a member of the Brooklyn Art Society. After leaving England, he painted under several pseudonyms including A Van Willis from 1852-1862, A.V. Willis in 1862 and Edmund van Willis. This was possibly due to contractual commitments for a number of private galleries as well as being a rule within the English society of painters to which he belonged. His last address was 19 McDonough Street, Brooklyn where he died on 3 February 1899. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
