This original 1872 oil-on-canvas landscape is a textbook example of French pastoral realism by the highly celebrated Barbizon-tradition animalier, Émile van Marcke de Lummen (1827–1890). The piece beautifully encapsulates the late-19th-century atmospheric shift and artistic prestige surrounding van Marcke's career. THE SUBJECT MATTER: The composition centers on a dark-red cow resting quietly in a vast pasture, flanked by scattered cattle and sheep grazing along a rolling hillside. A distinctive, shimmering water puddle sits in the immediate foreground, capturing the sky's reflection—a favorite compositional element used by the artist to anchor light. STYLE: The sweeping, heavy cloud formation overhead and the muted palette strongly resemble van Marcke's penchant for capturing transient weather, closely tying its atmospheric mood to his famous 1872 masterpiece, “The Approach of a Storm,” currently housed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. LOCATION: Given the topography, this piece likely depicts a scene from the Bresle Valley in Normandy. Van Marcke established a home and studio there around this period to paint regional livestock directly from nature.
