About the Item
Ernest Rouart (1874–1942), Girl with a dog 60 x 50 cm. French Impressionist in the Degas–Manet circle
The painting is signed lower right with rosaceous red letters, preserved on its original canvas and stretcher. It has never been relined. On the reverse appears the stamp of the supplier “Tasset et L’Hôte, 31 rue Fontaine, Paris”, a dealer much used by the Impressionists.
The work shows some wear and minor paint liftings, probably the result of experimental techniques adopted by the artist, which have been secured by a professional restorer.
Ernest Rouart (1874–1942) was a French Impressionist painter, raised from childhood in an exceptional artistic environment. His father Henri, a close friend of Degas and collector of Corot, Courbet, Manet, Morisot and Gauguin, opened his home to artists and their works: thus the young Ernest grew up surrounded by masterpieces that would define the history of Impressionism. This early exposure to light and colour shaped his vision long before his professional choice.
Degas, who almost never accepted pupils, made an exception for him and guided his training through drawing and the study of the Old Masters. In 1900, Rouart married his wife Julie Manet, daughter of Berthe Morisot and niece of Édouard Manet, thus entering one of the most emblematic families of French painting.
His style is characterised by intimacy and delicacy. Although working in oil, his surfaces often recall the soft pastel effects of Degas, with softened contours and gentle luminosity. He preferred family scenes, gardens and portraits, animated by a clear palette and joyful colours, turning everyday life into serene and vital images.
Rouart was also a custodian of Impressionism: he preserved part of his father’s collection, organised retrospectives on Degas, Manet and Morisot, and together with his wife Julie Manet enriched French public collections with important donations to the Louvre and the Musée de l’Orangerie.
This work depicts a girl with a straw hat and a dog in a flowering garden. Red and yellow flowerbeds stand out vividly against the dark background, creating a lively and harmonious contrast.
