Clearly signed and dated: g.morland. 1796. George Morland was born in June 1763. An English painter, mainly of scenes from rural life, the son and pupil of Henry Morland (1716–97) a painter of portraits and fancy pictures who was also a dealer, forger, and restorer. George Morland is a well recorded 18th/ 19th century landscape painter who was one of the first British artists to depict the hardships of rural life an living, he is well recorded and exhibited in many museums including the V&A and the Tate. His works throughout history have been sought after in many important collections including many aristocratic families, this is a fine example of a white horse outside of a stable with excellent composition and condition. George was a precocious child and a hard worker and produced a huge amount of works, in spite of leading a dissolute life and often being drunk and in hiding from his creditors, or in prison. His name is particularly associated with scenes of middle and lower class rural life, usually drawn more from the tavern and the stable than the cottage and the rural idyll. George Morland is one of England's most well loved and known artists of this era and his works hang in numerous museum collections. In this painting, the moonlight on the horses back gives a magical and ghostly impression. Here, he was truly at his best. His paintings became extremely popular and he was much imitated and forged. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1784 to just before he died. Clean and ready to hang.
