About

Available for sale is this original painting by Henry Robinson Hall dating from the last decade of the 19th century. The painting is presented and supplied in its’ original substantial and elaborate frame (which is shown in these photographs). The frame was originally glazed and the original glass has been replaced with non-reflective glass (Tru Vue UltraVue® UV70 glass). The surface of this antique painting is good and untouched. The piece hung for many years in a Scottish farmhouse with an open fireplace, causing some colouration to the frame, although it has benefitted from cleaning, and a little light restoration. The piece is supplied ready to hang and display. As well as the photographs, a video is provided to show the complete perimeter (all four sides) of the frame. The frame dimensions are 75cm high x 101cm wide. The visible painting is 49.5cm high x 75cm wide (19.5inches high x 29.5inches wide). The painting is signed and titled on the reverse. Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian artist who was particularly noted for his works on Highland cattle. He painted in both oils and watercolours. He was born in York to Eliza Robinson in 1859 and registered as Henry Robinson. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in 1867, and so his surname was changed accordingly. Hall lived for a while in Newcastle upon Tyne where he became involved in the artistic community. He later moved to Fylde in Lancashire and married. He later lived in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he had a studio and also ran an artists’ supplies shop and café. He died in Coniston on 31 May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews church there. Hall exhibited his works from 1895-1903 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. Today his works are held in the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, the Oldham Gallery, the Rossendale Museum and the Lakeland Arts Trust. He was a fellow of the North British Academy of Arts. This original oil on canvas painting depicts a group of adorable Highland cattle, two in the foreground and three in the background. They all have long shaggy coats, in different shades of brown, and the curly horns typical of their breed. They are standing on a moor in Perthshire, Scotland, alongside a free-flowing stream. All around them is bracken, purple heather and moorland grass, and boulders of white stone. The moor on the far side of the stream rises up into the sky, which is itself filled with pale rolling clouds. The overall palette is mellow and warm, but there is a freshness to this painting. You can almost feel the moisture in the chilled air!
