About the Item

Available for sale is this original painting by Henry Robinson Hall dating from the last decade of the 19th century. The painting is presented and supplied in a mid-20thcentury ornate frame. The painted surface has benefitted from some restoration, cleaning and conservation performed when in previous ownership within the last 10 years. The canvas was lined during this restoration process. This antique painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It is supplied ready to hang and display. The frame dimensions are 71cm high x 101.5cm wide. The visible painting is 60cm high x 90.5cm wide (23.6inches high x 35.6inches wide). The painting is signed lower left. Henry Robinson Hall was a Victorian and Edwardian artist who was particularly noted for his works on Highland cattle. He painted in both oils and watercolours. He was born in York to Eliza Robinson in 1859 and registered as Henry Robinson. His mother subsequently married John Storey Hall in 1867, and so his surname was changed accordingly. Hall lived for a while in Newcastle upon Tyne where he became involved in the artistic community. He later moved to Fylde in Lancashire and married. He later lived in Barrow in Furness and then Coniston in Cumbria, where he had a studio and also ran an artists’ supplies shop and café. He died in Coniston on 31 May 1927 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrews church there. Hall exhibited his works from 1895-1903 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. Today his works are held in the National Collection, the Atkinson Art Gallery, the Oldham Gallery, the Rossendale Museum and the Lakeland Arts Trust. He was a fellow of the North British Academy of Arts. This original oil on canvas painting depicts a herd of adorable Highland cattle; a white one in the foreground, black and brown coloured cattle slightly behind. They have just rounded the bend of a pass or path in the Trossachs and are walking towards the viewer. To the right of the painting is a fast-flowing river, the cold waters pouring in torrents over large boulders. To both sides of the pass the granite rocks of the Trossachs tower above. The foliage of the trees which are scattered down the riverside and the rich mellow colours of the grassy verges suggest that this is late summer. The sky is cloudy, but the air is bright and one can almost smell the freshness of this idyllic scene. The Trossachs is the name given to the area of wooded glens, braes and lochs which lie to the east of Ben Lomond in the Stirling area of Scotland. © Big Sky Fine Art
