Jason Noushin
All Her Number'd Stars

2017

About

"All Her Number'd Stars" is the most sculptural of Jason Noushin's painting, even bordering on a relief sculpture. This work uses unique materials such as plaster and lace to create an ode to the powerful horse, which stands tall and proud, filling the canvas almost completely. The body of the horse is layered with plaster and oil paint, highlighting the musculature of the animal. The horse's hair, made of modeled lace, seems to be blown by the wind and follows the horse's leftward gaze. The backside and legs of the horse's body are tattooed with Persian calligraphy, a common theme in Noushin's work. The artist writes transliterations of english poems, stories and words in Persian calligraphy. By translating just the sounds rather than full words, he creates a sort of code from two different cultures.
