About the Item
Johnny Defeo’s work belongs to the concept of souvenir, attempting to capture the experiences he has in the natural world, where he feels free and most at home. His paintings and rugs focus on the physical margins between unmitigated wilderness and human construction in an attempt to represent the psychological division between egocentric and holistic thought. He makes work with the earnest goal of minimizing the perceived divide between the natural world and the manmade and illuminating the connections between beauty both quintessential and manufactured.
Johnny’s interest in rugs as a material with which to create iterations of his paintings is informed by from his interest in interior design, luxury goods, and traditional forms of craft, which he finds to be more experiential and approachable than traditional fine arts practices.
In Rivers, a collection of self portraits floating nude in bodies of water all over the world serve as souvenirs of a freeing and reenergizing experience- a moment of submersion into the life-giving force of flowing water. These self portraits serve as the basis for his paintings and rugs, merging his explorations of the sublime with the process of making functional works that address the barriers between nature and culture, inside and outside.
Johnny lives and works in Denver, Colorado. He earned his MFA in painting from CU Boulder in 2017. During his time at CU he exhibited in national juried MFA exhibitions in New York and Chicago, and organized exhibitions and collaborative curatorial projects with artists and curators in Boulder and Denver. In 2018, he will be exhibiting in several group shows, as well as two solo shows, and will attend the Jentel artist residency in Wyoming.

- Screaming Young Kestral II - Photorealistic Bird Portrait, Cloud Covered SkyBy Rick PasLocated in Chicago, ILPainted with such exacting detail it is hard to believe it is not a photograph. This piece is framed in a simple wooden frame measuring 27 x 27 inches. Rick Pas Screaming Young Kestrel 2 acrylic on panel 12h x 12w in 30.48h x 30.48w cm RPA016 ARTIST'S STATEMENT Creating is an addiction. With all the highs and lows you would expect. I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting. This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me. - San Rafael Reef #2By Mark KnudsenLocated in Salt Lake City, UTSan Rafael Reef #2, acrylic on panel, 11 x 37 1/2 inches, $2,200 “It is my feeling that the desert country of the American West is too large, too wild, too gorgeous to be encompassed by traditional landscape painting. Our inherited aesthetic defines beauty in landscape as green and arable land or grand, breathtaking places. I feel the need to expand that definition. I want to portray the desert as it is right now; to dispense with the limitations of what has come before, to quietly point out the beauty of places that are harsh and forbidding to habitation but express an aesthetic of the wild. I strive to go beyond the sentimentality that often defines our images of the West. The scale of many of my pieces (an extreme horizontal) is a compositional strategy to capture the vastness of these places.” – M. Knudsen Mark Knudsen...Category
