Lesli DeVito
Nantucket, Original Painting

2018

About the Item

Artist Comments
Blue and white sheep orbit in a rich pink landscape. The fluffy animals all look to the viewer with a regal, knowing pose. Part of Lesli DeVito's long running series of sheep, pairing these gentle animals with clever titles to represent human thoughts and groups. Of this painting, Lesli says, "During one single bicycle ride in Nantucket, I watched the fishing boats unload their daily catches, witnessed the birth of a baby horse on a farm and enjoyed an ice cream cone while watching the sunset. Never underestimate all the wonders you can experience on one bike ride in Nantucket."

About the Artist
Lesli Devito can't quite remember when she started painting, just that she's been doing it for quite a while now. With no formal training, Lesli took her own path and experimented with different types of paint. Eventually, she settled on something unconventional: acrylic house paint. She hopes that her works will "take people to their happy place." Lesli also created a blog called My Old Country House in which she writes about her life, art and other adventures.

  • Murmuration, Original Painting
    By Alana Clumeck
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
Artist Alana Clumeck demonstrates a contemporary image of a herd of wild horses trotting across a plain. She pulls inspiration from a visit to her native homeland, Australia. "I was struck by the sheer volume of parrots flying in the sky," shares Alana. She combines inspiration from a mix of her two homes—the murmuration of the Australian budgerigar that shows up in the masses and a herd of galloping horses inspired by the western culture of the Santa Ynez Valley.

    About the Artist
Australian-born Alana Clumeck was raised by artistic parents who owned a pottery studio during her youth. Although she grew up throwing pots, it wasn’t until she was pregnant with her second child that she began painting as creative therapy. For Alana, being an artist is entwined with motherhood. She works from her home studio, so she often paints while watching her children play. When the kids are at school, painting becomes precious meditative time alone. “Since my discovery of art came as a form of therapy, I still use it to paint out my thoughts or feelings,” says Alana. “I will often use symbolism within my paintings to represent how I feel.”

"Mixed Marriage" by Maureen O'Hara Ure, mixed media on panel, 16 x 24 inches. Relying on sturdy panel to hold up to months, sometimes years, of revisions, O'Hara Ure slowly builds up an image, obsessively laying down marks in thin, sanded layers of paint, ink, and pencil to create a uniquely smooth, almost polished texture distinctive to her style. When a panel returns to her studio from a show, she may begin to tinker with the image, perhaps first sanding out or painting over just a section. "Often as not, I keep going and start all over, using gesso to erase any memory I have of the painting." "For over fifteen years, all of my major projects have begun with my drawing overseas in museums and at historical sites. I returned to my studio and set about using some of the raw ideas in my travel sketchbooks to begin developing new work, taking liberties with the art-historical material I had collected. The exhibit of new paintings on panel at Phillips Gallery...
