Monoprint Painting Abstract Wild Horses Western Art Jean Richardson American
Located in Surfside, FL
Jean Richardson signed and dated Monoprint. Hand signed and dated in pencil Richardson '88 lower right. 'Monoprint' in pencil lower left. Measures 28-in. x 43.5-in. plate size.
Richardson was born in Hollis, Oklahoma. She works in painting, printmaking and sculpture techniques. She earned her BFA degree from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, and continued study with the Art Students League in New York. Jean is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Her work has been exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Minnesota Museum of Art, the Gilcrease Museum and the Philbrook Museum, both in Oklahoma. An Oklahoma native, Richardson has had a lifelong interest in Western "myth". Although she uses the contemporary vocabulary of modern painting, she finds deep connections to the frontier west. Selected Quotations Quotations from “Turning Toward Home: The Art of Jean Richardson”: “Her horse is a symbol for the human spirit, passionate, unbridled, resolute.” “Jean Richardson belongs to a modernist tradition that fuses the spiritual with the abstract.” “She is adamantly devoted to an art that is abstract rather than non-objective; in her painting she transforms reality rather than repudiates it. But Richardson’s reality is not that of everyday external appearances. She generates her paintings from spontaneous gestures initiated in her subconscious. Her nearly automatist expression, in which she pursues imagery that arises from her manipulation of the medium, is risky and revealing. Richardson seeks to both develop and destroy the image, to achieve a perfect suspension of form and content. This gives much of her art the feeling of a balancing act. The viewer has the sense of being on the edge of something, of trying to grasp a vision that slides in and out of focus.” Quotation from “National Gallery Guide”, December 1990 “Jean Richardson paintings seem to express to us the spirit and energy of the American West. The wild abstracted horses of her ‘Sky Herds’ are like a pageant acted out upon the grand stage of the prairie skies. Yet the subject matter is only incidental to the emotional content of these paintings, where exuberance, grace, energy, and joy are the themes woven into painterly, textured canvases. Like Fritz Scholder and Leonard Baskin there is something almost mystical in her artworks.

Feeding the Pigeons
Oil on panel, signed & dated 1917
Image size: 9.5 inches x 13.5 inches
Size including frame: 14 inches x 18 inches
A charming painting of a girl feeding birds outside a timber framed Tudor house, by Frank Moss Bennett. Bennett developed a fascination for Tudor buildings which appear regularly in his paintings. The house depicted in this work seems to have been a particular favourite and was used as a back drop on a number of occasions.
Frank Moss Bennett was a portrait and genre painter who was born in Liverpool on November 15, 1874. He was the son of the Iron Founder Henry Mellor Bennett who was also became mayor of Liverpool. His family’s wealth enabled him to receive a good education, initially with a governess and then at Clifton College in Bristol. His talent for art emerged at a young age, however it was not until he left Bristol that he decided to follow a career in painting.
He moved to London in 1892, most likely with his family who went to live in Croydon after his father’s retirement. There he studied at the Slade School of Art where he was taught by Henry Tonks and John Singer Sargent. He also met fellow artist Eddie Wells who became his friend, travel partner and brother-in-law. He later attended the St John’s School of Art and in 1896 entered the Royal Academy school, winning a gold medal and a scholarship to travel. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1898 with a work entitled ‘A Book Plate’, continuing to exhibit there until 1929. He also exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.
In 1900, Bennett used his scholarship money to go on a painting expedition to Italy with his friend Wells. On his return he lived with his family at 18 Warrington Road, Croydon and took a studio nearby at Alipore, Duppas Hill, where he began specialising in historical genre and portraits. His work portrayed life in seventeenth and eighteenth century England, depicting figures in tavern interiors, gentlemen discussing affairs of State or at leisure in their homes. He wanted his works to be historically accurate and used authentic props and antiques. He also accrued a large collection of costumes, some of which were later given to the Platt Hall Museum, Manchester and the Museum of London. He also developed an interest in historical architecture, particularly Tudor and made many sketches of buildings...

Course de Chevaux a Longchamp (Horses Race in Longchamp)
By Gabriel Dauchot
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Course de chevaux a Lonchamp (Horses Race in Lonchamp) c.1960, is an oil painting on canvas by noted French artist Gabriel Dauchot, 1917-1990. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The canvas size is 18.65 x 7.5 inches, framed size is 21.85 x 11.85 inches. Custom framed in a wooden green frame. About the artist:
Gabriel Dauchot was born on May 10, 1927 in Livry-Gargan 4 . Supported by the encouragement of his father, an architect, and painting from the age of fourteen 5 , Gabriel Dauchot, whose admiration goes to Maurice Utrillo and Chaïm Soutine 5 , received advice in 1940 from Émile Othon Friesz and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière , then entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in 1942 . He participated in Parisian Salons from his youth and was not yet twenty when the Katia Granoff 6 gallery , then the Cardo 7 gallery , organized his first personal exhibitions.
“The winner is under thirty years old” observes Claude Roger-Marx , who does not fail to note “the atmosphere of disguise which is dear to him” as well as “the muted truculence which he gives to the opaque backgrounds where sing with distinction cold grays, greens, carmines and saffron” 8 when in 1951 the prize from the Society of Collectors and Art Lovers was awarded to Gabriel Dauchot.
Waldemar George observed in the 1950s that if "his early works were treated in a realistic style which sometimes borders on populism, the painter tries to free himself from it and reacts against a literary art...
