About the Item

Samuel Fulton Scottish, (1855-1941) A West Highland Terrier Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1921 Image size: 17.5 inches x 13.5 inches Size including frame: 26.5 inches x 22.5 inches Samuel Fulton was born in Glasgow on 26 April 1855, the son of Samuel Fulton, a baker and Jane Strang. He lived at Surrey Street and attended the Free Church Normal School before entering High School. Initially he worked as an apprentice baker in his father’s business before starting to paint for a living at around the age of 24. He lived in Airdrie in 1881 and also worked from Torrance, Stirlingshire and Campsil Glen & Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire. During the late 19th century he returned to the family business but continued painting. He exhibited in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Fulton specialised in painting portraits of dogs and was adept at capturing the character and mood of the animal in his work. It is highly likely he kept dogs himself possibly West Highland Terriers as he painted the breed repeatedly throughout his life. Examples of his paintings can be found at the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Art Gallery & Museum and the Paisley Museum. Presentation: The painting is housed in its original gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse of the frame bears a label for Daniel Miller, Carver & Gilder who supplied picture frames. They also had a showroom where they would display paintings by eminent Scottish and English artists. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

**PLEASE NOTE: EACH PAINTING INCLUDING THE FRAME MEASURES 19.5 INCHES X 31.5 INCHES ** Robert Gallon British, (1845-1925) On a Scotch Hillside & On the Cliffs Oil on canvas, pair, both signed with old labels verso Image size: 11.75 inches x 23.75 inches (each) Size including frame: 19.5 inches x 31.5 inches (each) A lovely pair of Scottish landscape paintings featuring sheep and cattle by Robert Gallon. The first depicts Highland sheep on a hillside with a Scottish loch below. The second painting shows Highland cattle grazing on cliffs overlooking the sea. At the time of these paintings, Gallon was living at 32 Alma Square in St John’s Wood and they were most likely painted during one of his excursions to the Highlands. Robert Gallon was a landscape painter born in Deptford, Kent in 1845 to the artist Robert Samuel Ennis Gallon (1807-1867) and his wife Cecilia Ann Russell. He lived with his family at Evelyn Place in Deptford. He was most likely tutored by his father; however, his subject matter was inspired by artists such as Benjamin Williams Leader and George Vicat Cole. Gallon began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1868 and in 1873 made his debut at Royal Academy from an address at 12, Tavistock Row, Covent Garden. He was a regular contributor to both galleries, continuing to exhibit at the RSBA until 1893 and at the RA until 1903. He also exhibited at some of the smaller establishments including the Hampstead Art Society, Mendoza Gallery and St James’s Gallery as well as at provincial galleries. By 1876, he had moved to 28 Alma Square in St John’s Wood. He married Catherine Elizabeth Atkinson on 18 July, 1877 and together they had 3 children...

  • "A River Landscape with Wild Horses", Victorian original, oil on canvas
    By John Frederick Herring Jr
    Located in Nutfield, Surrey
This is an original unique oil painting by the artist. Born into an artistic family in Doncaster, England during 1820. Best known for his equine art, of the same character as those of the elder Herring, including "The Home Farm," "The Homestead," "The Farm-Yard," etc.John F. Herring, Jr. was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire c.1820, to the well-known 19th-century artist John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865), who at the time, was considered one of England's great Sporting and Equestrian artists, patronized by the English aristocracy. The father's mastery of the brush, and popularity with the nobility, served his son, Herring, Jr., well. Early on, John, Jr. was exposed to fine painting and wealthy patrons. Recent reference books state that Herring, Sr.'s first child was named "John Frederick Herring, Jr." and was born on June 21, 1815. John Herring, Jr. developed a love for painting, a passion also shared by his brothers Charles and Benjamin. Three of the four brothers became artists, painting in the same style as their father, often collaborating on a single painting. In the years after 1836, Herring, Sr., feeling threatened by the teenage John Herring, Jr.'s ability and growing popularity, began incorporating the tag "SR" at the end of his signature. John Herring, Jr. continued painting in the tradition of his father, the sporting and animal pictures...
