"Portrait of a Spaniel, " France 19th century

About the Item

Portrait of a Spaniel France, 19th century Oil on canvas, original gold leaf frame 15 ¾ x 14 ¼ (21 x 19 ½ frame) inches Signed illegibly, lower left Above the signature reads the note:' To the doctor... in recognition of his devotion." In the upper left hand corner has been attached an exhibition from a long-ago "salon." This finely rendered portrait of someone's beloved spaniel was carefully studied to capture soft, sweet glow in the dog's eyes. The curly fur is deftly handled indicating a painter of significant skill. The painting is a beautiful example of the 19th century fashion for custom dog portraiture.
