Charlotte Andry Gibbs"Flag #4" Pop-Art Americana Contemporary Flag in Tan, White and Black 2018
2018
About the Item
Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized American flag in altered colors of black, white, and tan, "Flag #4" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention
"Flag #4"
Acrylic on Linen
26 x 50 Inches
.
This painting is currently unframed but the artist can make her usual simple double lattice white wood frame for it which is the perfect complement.
Gibbs is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' to customize scale, orientation, palette, and/or symbols of particular significance to the client.
Cate McQuaid, “The Boston Globe,” January 12, 2013:
“Gold brightens up the darkest days of the year at Beth Urdang Gallery, and Charlotte Andry Gibbs makes liberal use of it in her paintings. Gibbs focuses on iconography, using gold leaf and paint to re-create flags, corporate logos, and legendary works of art. While crafting a gold American flag, or a Coca-Cola or Chevrolet logo in gold feels like a too obvious jab at capitalism, all the works together draw intriguing formal connections.”
Charlotte Andry Gibbs attended Newcomb College and received a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1971. She has had numerous one-person exhibitions at the Beth Urdang Gallery and has been included in over 25 group shows, primarily in the New England area where the artist resides. Most recently Gibbs had the distinct honor of being awarded First Prize in the Roddy Compeition held at the Concord Center for Visual Arts, where she was singled out among the 540 submissions by 340 artists by Katherine French, the Director.
