Painted in Oil on a board coated with gesso, the size of the image is 31cm x 41cm and framed the dimensions are 44.5cm x 55cm. I produced this painting in the studio after a winter visit to the town of Brugge in Belgium. The whole place was decorated for Christmas with the packed market stalls bringing light and colour to the streets and squares where people wandered, eating street food or enjoying a glass of warm spiced wine. Parked in various locations the horses and carriages stand waiting patiently for the next fare. Heading away to the slightly quieter side streets the horses take a short break to eat and drink before setting out again. As the light starts to drop, the rich glow from the decorations seems to colour the sky and this seen through the bare trees reflects in the damp pavements, giving the scene a magical air. As with painting livestock in a barn or market it is these “behind the scenes” situations that I love to paint. The loose marks used to paint the old buildings and trees across the park help describe the light and colour as it illuminates the picture, capturing that moment in time. Colin Allbrook is one of the most respected and renowned painters in the South-West of England. Working in both oils and watercolours and through the use of light and colour, Colin depicts the life and activity of the area. His work has been regularly selected for prestigious exhibitions such as the Sunday Times Watercolour competition and the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils. He is an elected member of the Royal institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and the Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA). He has received many awards for his work, including, in 2009, both the Turner Watercolour Award and the Rowland Hilder Award for landscape painting at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition. He has also twice won the Terence Cuneo medal at the SEA and the Excellence in Watercolour; prize at the Royal West of England Academy four times. Selling mainly through exhibitions galleries his paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the world. Colin has lived and worked in Umberleigh in Devon for over 40 years, where he has a studio by the River Taw, in a beautiful area which inspires so much of his work
