Doug Smith
A Boy and His Dog

About the Item

"Part of an exhibition of 12 notable American artists, the U. S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. My five paintings, along with paintings from Fritz Scholder, Richard Diebornkorn to name a few, were hung in the palatial Spaso House, the residence of the U. S. Ambassadore to Russia" -Doug Smith Encouraged by his parents at a young age to pursue his love of art, Doug Smith brings to life vast planes of melting colors and geometric lines, with the inclusion of meticulously painted farmsteads paying homage to the idyllic farmhouses of times past. The tiny scenes, brimming with familiarity and warmth, anchor the endlessly abstract landscape in a believable reality. The inspired paintings blend aerial landscapes, Smith’s experience in graphic design, and a traditional detailed vignette showing a peek into pastoral American life. Smith received his first formal artistic instruction at San Francisco City College, and after working as a graphic designer in San Francisco, continued his education at the Art Center College of Design and the California Art Institute. Drawing from his Californian roots, Smith evokes the aesthetics of the abstract aerial landscapes of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. Smith has long been fascinated by the vast mosaics of the archetypal American West. With vivid planes of color and an attention to refined geometric composition, Smith’s paintings are an intimate mix between abstract expressionism and a small dash of realistic landscape painting, inspired by long flights over the country and even longer drives across it. The inclusion of weathered barns and silos, wraparound porches, and rustic windmills transport the viewer to idyllic and familiar scenes reminiscent of travels through the Western and Midwestern United States. Smith has exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States. His art, along with eleven other American artists, was featured at an exhibition at the U. S. Embassy in Moscow in 2012-2013. The Rockwell Museum in New York and the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia have both acquired one of his paintings for their permanent collections.

San Rafael Reef #2, acrylic on panel, 11 x 37 1/2 inches, $2,200 “It is my feeling that the desert country of the American West is too large, too wild, too gorgeous to be encompassed by traditional landscape painting. Our inherited aesthetic defines beauty in landscape as green and arable land or grand, breathtaking places. I feel the need to expand that definition. I want to portray the desert as it is right now; to dispense with the limitations of what has come before, to quietly point out the beauty of places that are harsh and forbidding to habitation but express an aesthetic of the wild. I strive to go beyond the sentimentality that often defines our images of the West. The scale of many of my pieces (an extreme horizontal) is a compositional strategy to capture the vastness of these places.” – M. Knudsen Mark Knudsen...
