A difficult scene of the stoning of St. Stephen rendered by Aldo Pagliacci in a surreal manner. The bloodstained wall evokes the work of Cy Twombly, an abstract painting all its own, while the saint lies in graceful repose in the foreground.
Pagliacci is considered a romantic realist painter whose surrealistic landscapes often show groups of semi-clad and attractive depersonalized youths which suggest the artist's alienation as a gay man. This painting of Saint Stephen, the first martyr of Christianity, is part of a small group of paintings he made in the 1950s and early 1960s which expresses his anger towards religious orthodoxy. The martyr is depicted with 3 stones behind his head which is part of the traditional iconography associated with him.
His work can be compared to Eugene Berman (1899-1972) and Giorgio de Chirico (1888 - 1978) who both painted empty and forlorn landscapes evocative of emotional longing.
