Alfred Guillou
A Fresh Catch

About the Item

Alfred Guillou (French 1844-1926) "A Fresh Catch" Oil on Canvas Signed Lower Left Canvas Size: approx 18 x 24 inches Framed Size: approx 24 x 30 inches Alfred Guillou was born in Concarneau as a son of a harbor pilot. In 1862 he began his artistic training at the Académie Suisse in Paris and continued at the École des Beaux Arts in 1864. He finally returned to his city of birth in 1871, where he founded an artists' colony together with Théophile Deyrolle (1844-1923). Guillou initially focused on depictions of everyday life of Breton sailors, fishermen and market women. Later he also created anecdotal genre paintings. He varied his style and application of colors depending on the subject and format. Most of his works are, however, painted in a precise naturalism. (cbo)

By 1815, Herring had married Ann Harris; his sons John Frederick Herring Jr., Charles Herring, and Benjamin Herring were all to become artists, while his two daughters, Ann and Emma, both married painters.
