About the Item

Amanda Joy Brown is a visual artist and educator based in Nashville, TN. Brown earned her MFA in the painting program at the Savannah College of Art and Design. During her time there she studied at the Lacoste Residency in Provence, France, after which she completed a month-long residency at the Vermont Studio Center. After moving to Nashville, Brown was part of the Ground Floor Gallery+Studios collective for several years, occasionally teaching while working in her studio. Her work is exhibited and collected internationally. ARTIST STATEMENT Emerging from an interest in the overlapping mechanisms drawing and painting, the Crowd Series centers around interconnecting webs and calligraphic, dripped line work. These marks both create and distort recognizable form, exploring the space between chaos and composure. Collective and individual identity are both defined and dissolved in these pieces, embodying the energy and organism-like nature of interconnected individuals sharing a place and time.

REWA says of her work… Viewers largely label me under “Contemporary African Art”. I label my work as Igbo Vernacular Art. The reason for this is that I believe that I have created a truly original body of work that exists outside formal academic or Western dialogue. My art is drawn from life itself and deeply anchored in a place and culture from which it was derived. This is the Igbo culture pertaining to the Igbos of Nigeria. I think that this description is more accurate as it implies a unique iteration of customs and tradition, bound to a particular location and a particular people.  Igbo Vernacular Art is not to be mistaken with Folk Art, but rather, concerns itself with an expressive aesthetic that would be more commonly associated with Contemporary of Modern Art; form, composition and narrative. Vernacular dialects are anchored to a particular land, and in much the same way, my art contains a vocabulary that is built on a strong sense of place and is situated in a location and a history.  It is my hope that one day, my work will be included in art historical dialogue about Africa and specifically Nigeria, beyond the confines of the wide-reaching Contemporary African Art designation. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ REWA was born and raised between Nigeria and England and received a BSc. in Physiology and Pharmacology from University College London (UCL). Blue Statue, 2020 "For Blackburn, the Western’s heroic drama, good-versus-evil narrative, and assertive landscape are challenges to face in her work. These aspects of film can overwhelm a painting, thus distancing the viewer from the art. She wants the art to be dominant; “Painting wins,” she declares. She finds this happens when a painting possesses what she terms “classical balance.” By this the artist means that everything is where it needs to be compositionally—nothing can be changed—and “the whole can be seen at once.” Linda Blackburn...
