Andrea SchiavoneApollo and Cupid Circle of Andrea Schiavone (1522-1563) - Contemporary of Titian
Circle of Andrea Schiavone (1522-1563) Named originally Andrea Meldolla, he was called Schiavone (the ‘Slavonian’) because he came from Zara on the Dalmatian coast. He spent most of his life working in Venice. His style was derived from Parmigianino. Schiavone was a contemporary of Titian and was influenced by Venetian colouring. He was on friendly terms with Titian. By 1540 Schiavone had established himself and introduced Mannerist modes to his work which further evolved as after 1550, Schiavone incorporated more naturalism into his painting. Though he retained his open brushwork and vibrating textures, his color harmonies grew darker and more complex, his forms denser, his emotion quieter and more grave. The inventive paint handling in his late works were influenced by such painters as Palma il Giovane. His many technically innovative etchings also influenced later artists such as Jacques Bellange, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and Rembrandt. Schiavone was one of the founders of the Venetian style of Mannerism, and an influence on Tintoretto. This is fine painting of Apollo in pursuit of Daphne being intercepted by Cupid. Schiavone’s work is held in major public and private collections world wide including The National Gallery London, National Galleries of Scotland and the Paul Getty Museum. Housed in a later frame, note name plaque incorrectly dated, should read 1522 - 1563.
