19th-Century French Barbizon School Landscape, Little Wood Gather by a Lily Pond

About the Item

An evocative late 19th-century French oil on canvas depicting a young boy gathering firewood near a lily pond. Painted circa 1880, the work captures a quiet moment, focusing on the child with big ears in a weathered, oversized jacket. Rather than presenting the boy forward facing, which would have been more conventional, the artist makes the bold compositional choice to depict the subject walking entirely away from the viewer, moving into the dark woods. Stylistically, the work aligns closely with the Barbizon school—the influential artistic movement spearheaded by Jean-François Millet and Théodore Rousseau in the Fontainebleau forest region that revolutionised the realistic depiction of rural French life. The oil on canvas has been restored and may have originally been part of a larger, composition. The reverse stretcher bears an annotation for "A. Thivet," suggesting it might be the work of Antoine Auguste Thivet (1856–1927). A notable academic painter, Thivet studied under Aimé Millet and the legendary Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Paris Salon starting in 1877, ultimately receiving an Honorable Mention in 1899. Unsigned, the size of the canvas alone Is 46 x 38 cm.
