FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Antonio Gonzalez-Collado was born on September 29, 1930 in El Ferrol (Galicia, Spain). Civil war broke out in the country when he was 6 years old. At the age of thirteen, Antonio had to leave school and begin working. Already as an adolescent, he showed a penchant for drawing. At age 17, he joined his father in exile in Tunisia, and stayed with him until 1956. Collado remained passionate about drawing, and did some artwork for a number of associations. His first works went on display. In the meantime, in 1955, having been sent to take part in the French Gymnastics Team Championship, he discovered Paris and the Louvre. His discovery lead him to return to the city in 1956, this time to stay. He worked several jobs to gain a living, but that did not keep him from attending night classes at Montparnasse 80, where he studied under Adam, Lesbouni, and Martial. He also took classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In September, 1959, he met the pastelist Evelyne Wavrant. They were to marry later, and had three girls, Manolie, Géraldine, and Laurence. In 1961, he began showing his works in various galleries in Paris and in Japan. Gonzalez Collado is the Spanish painter of modern dancers, of tiny ‘Opera rats,’ of clowns, of cats, of groups of young people, and, sometimes, of landscapes around Paris. I climbed up to the top of the Butte Montmartre in 1957, and I met the painter Romo, a Spanish artist who had been at the Fine Arts School in Madrid with my brother. Since then, I’ve spent a lot of time at Montmartre – the atmosphere is really unique. It’s where I met Creixams, Cahours, Galanis, Moretti, Cebal, Bayon, and all the other painters, as well as the writers Marcel Aymé, Vertex… Antoine, at the Crémaillère, was the only one who would let the painters and portrait artists work in his establishment. That’s how I got to paint people playing chess or cards. Back then, Michel Polnareff came there to play guitar with friends; that was before he got to be a success. I was there on the day that the Beatles came to Montmartre. The painter Tyko had his picture taken with them. In those days, Attilio ran the Pichet du Tertre, Pierre Labric was mayor of the Free Commune, and Anatole was the village policeman. Patachou’s cabaret was at 13, rue du Mont Cenis. On the Impasse Trainée cul-de-sac there was a deli run by Monsieur and Madame Bachard, a couple with hearts as big as a cathedral. Madame Bachard, with her Perigordian accent, ran the place, taking care of the customers and providing meals for the painters and other penniless people. Monsieur Bachard, a former coal merchant, was a real character; his chatter was as abundant as his waist was wide. A.G.Collado Biography © Galerie Roussard
