About the Item

Using bright and saturated pinks and greens, Ariel Basson Freiberg paints a female nude kneeling and offering a necklace to the sky. The figure's dynamic position displays her body in an unapologetically sensual and confident manner, though Freiberg adds a few deftly placed brushstrokes to cover the figure from being entirely visible to the viewer's gaze. Ariel Basson Freiberg is a Boston-based painter whose work explores the accelerators and brakes of sexuality through the body and gestures. For Freiberg, the physicality of paint colliding with the body demands immediacy and urgency from the viewer. The women emerge from a saturated background in undeniably erotic poses, but with all of the key information concealed with thick smears of paint across anything that might expose her subjects. She embraces the inherent quality of paint as a sensual medium—described with words like silken, smooth, thick, creamy—and uses it as a means of suggestion without indulgence. The gestures act as an ideogram, both a composite of an idea and a will. In addition, the work expresses color as an event, similar to color experiences of a flicker of warm sunlight through soft rhythmic leaves. Born in Texas of Iraqi/Israeli background, has an MFA in painting from Boston University and a BA from Smith College. She has had multiple solo shows and including exhibitions at Miller Yezerski Gallery, Dartmouth College, Tufts Art Gallery, Danforth Museum, Montserrat College of Art and the Art Center of Macedonia. Her work is reviewed in ARTnews, Boston Globe, Big Red and Shiny, and featured in Modern Painters for the Tenot Foundation Bursary for the residency, Camac in France. She received a Vermont Studio Center Fellowship in 2015. This year, "Amnesia" will be the cover of Definitions of Feminine Post Conflict Spaces. In addition, performance and installation, love like salt, was featured at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
