About the Item

Signed, titled and dated on the verso. Acquired directly from the artist. Painted on the sides. No frame needed. Free shipment worldwide. Cecilia Cubarle paints. She makes bold claims for painting and the pleasure of the “act of painting”. She enjoys the sensuality and the materiality of paint as a plastic resource; yet, at the same time, you feel that she is paying tribute to the masters of the history of art that have been shaping the iconography of her imagination. With her profoundly self-referential body of work, Cubarle forms part of the generation that began working at the dawn of the new millennium, at the moment when the western world felt that all its certainties had been undermined. If, towards the end of the 20th century, the collapse of the grand narratives of history laid bare the fragility of existence, then the start of the 21st century brought with it the sensation of permanent uncertainty and the establishment of a new world order for which the user’s manual is yet unknown. For Cubarle, painting is her refuge, the space in which her fortitude can flourish. It is a place from where she can make herself heard, from where the artist can articulate her message using a language of plain colours, of almost graphic directness, that resorts to “ready-made” images, and that sometimes even flirts with pop imagery. A simple and effective language in which she comments on, questions and discusses certain aspects of contemporary life with which she feels less than comfortable. In her paintings the artist appropriates, copies, amplifies, translates and replicates with obsessive meticulousness everything that captures her attention. A butterfly, an old Singer sewing machine or traffic signs, can be the point of departure, the trigger for any of her series. With her penetrating gaze, Cubarle critically metabolises her surroundings. Her anger at man’s exploitation of man and the subjugation of the rights of the citizen are the origin of the series on Les Droits de l’Homme (the Human Rights) from 2004. Cubarle has demonstrated similar commitment in dismantling several of the myths of our consumer society: from a Marilyn “to cut-out” to a “look-but-don’t-touch” Madonna, from a Superman knocked out by the global crisis to a Bin Laden converted into merchandising. From glamour girl to material girl, from superhero to supervillain, her characters file past in a biting commentary on the state of our contemporary world. For Cecilia Cubarle the history of art is an enormous “collection of figurines” that she ransacks to stock her own collage of images. She freely uses the most sacred and historical works of art, which she decontextualises with total abandon to put into a new context. In her series Art & Market, it’s all about dealing the artist ponders the question of how works of art are valued: for their aesthetic value or for their market price? She reflects on the phenomenon of financial speculation that is now associated with the market, and the mechanisms that regulate it. At the same time she parodies the very lexicon of the medium: Estimation and Conditions to buy and sell Art are some of the titles of her works. Displaying her personal universe, Cubarle’s painting carries a heavy existential load. Early in Cubarle’s career, her drawing teacher, Pablo González Padilla, observed, “Her work involves her and commits her both artistically and morally”. Through images that at first sight seem carefree and cheerful, the work of this young artist from Córdoba, Argentina, now settled in Paris, transmutes into a gigantic question mark that unrelentingly interrogates the spectator. Cubarle gives no respite. Behind the decorative appearance is revealed a profoundly humanist body of work, of great ethical commitment, in which the artist is permanently asking what her place is in the scheme of things. But, more significantly still, for her the overriding question is: “What is the place of contemporary humankind at this historical crossroads where we are fated to live?”

  • Marilyn puntos rojos
    By Antonio de Felipe

Painting Antonio de Felipe "Marilyn puntos rojos" Acquired directly from the artist. Free shipment worldwide. Painted on the sides. No frame needed. The work of Antonio de Felipe is a constant source of fascination and surprises. It is a great pleasure to witness how the artist’s inge-nious world of ideas and his sense of humour are constantly evolving. Antonio de Felipe was born in Valencia in 1965. Ever since a very young age he has felt an artistic drive that led him to earn a fine arts degree at the University of Valencia. During his studies he worked as a creative designer in an advertising agency which undoubtedly influenced what would be his future pictorial style. In 1996 he moved to Madrid where he has his studio. Antonio de Felipe has developed his extensive work in different series. His subject worlds form a surprising genre blend, a linking of series characters, classical art and commercialism side by side with contemporary icon worship. His motifs are often painted in constellations that pay homage to great artists, including Velázquez, Picasso, Mondrian and others. Many of his works exhibit an ingenious ability to express powerful paradoxes. One example of this can be seen in the paraphrase on Diego Velázquez famous Las Meninas (Spanish for The Maids of Honour), painted in 1656. Instead of the glass of cold, perfumed water in the original, Antonio de Felipe places a Fanta soft drink in the hand of the young Spanish princess Margarita. The painting is part of the series LOGOTIPOS (logos) devoted to the world of art and advertising. This series was followed by VACAS (cows), with paintings such as Vaca Vogue, a pink cow on the cover of a Vogue magazine. Then, CINEMASPOP where actors like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn among others were revived as pop icons, with well-known creations such as Black Audrey. In 2009 Antonio de Felipe presented POPSPORT in which the artist mixes the world of sport with cartoons and art history, uch as in La carrera where Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon are participating in a run at a stadium. And latest, the LPop series where the artist is playing with the motifs and titles of famous LP album covers, such as Bad Bart where Bart Simpson...

    By Erró
    Located in Malmo, SE
Artwork size: 81 x 119 cm. Frame size: 94 x 132 cm Free shipment worldwide. Acquired directly from the artist. Signed and dated on the verso. “I paint because painting is a private Utopia,” Erró writes of his art. The landscapes in Erró’s work are a constantly changing kaleidoscope of images, multivalent and mysterious, not infrequently controversial, bursting with life – and titillating, too! There is room in his pictures for both paradise and visions of fear. Erró is the alias of Gudmundur Gudmundsson, born on 19 July 1932 in Olafsvik, in north-western Iceland. Since Gudmundur first became enthralled by pictures of works of art in a catalogue from the Museum of Modern Art in New York at the tender age of ten, painting has been his passion and his mission in life. He was accepted into art school in Reykjavik as a 19-year old, subsequently complementing what he had learned there with further studies in Oslo. Erró travelled extensively in Spain, Italy, France and Germany in the 1950s, studying at the Florence Academy of Art in 1954 and at the School of Byzantine Mosaic Art in Ravenna in 1955. It was around this time that he began to exhibit his works, first and foremost in Paris, where he chose to make his home in 1958. During the 1960s he established contact with the Swedish museum director Pontus Hultén, who encouraged him and took him under his wing. Over the years Erró has taken part in hundreds of exhibitions and today his works are on show in museums all over the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Erró’s pictorial world is peopled by comic-strip characters and autocratic despots alike. Donald Duck with his Daisy, Chip & Dale, and other Walt Disney creations are unselfconsciously juxtaposed with Greek gods and madonnas. Elsewhere the German dictator Adolf Hitler stands shoulder to shoulder with his Iraqi counterpart Saddam Hussein...

  • Enjoyment
    By Maria Manuela
    Located in Malmo, SE
Free shipment worldwide Acquired directly from the artist. MariaManuela’s pictures define the contrasts between the culture of the Far East and the western world’s pop-culture at the same time as they bring the two forms together. She derives her inspiration from classic Japanese woodcuts and their motifs of fantastically coiffured, cherry-lipsticked women, dressed in exquisitely patterned kimonos. But what she presents for the viewer are modern young Japanese women in mini-skirts, dancing among the cherry blossom and haiku poems. Her Pop Icons are painted in vinyl on linen canvas – layer upon layer laboriously laid down to achieve the effect of a printed, japanned surface. The lines of the lips, the semi-circular contours of the eyes and the billowing coiffures are expressed against a monochromatic background. Her advertisement-like images combine mystique with unequivocal simplicity, setting a stage for all manner of different facial expressions – melancholy, pensive, jovial. Born in Stockholm in 1959, Maria Manuela Vintilescu’s first serious encounter with art came at the age of seven. It was with fascination that she viewed Niki de Saint-Phalle’s giant sculpture She, then displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm. After graduating from the Ecole Française in Stockholm, Maria took courses in painting, drawing and advertising. After ten years as a scene painter in the theatre, she turned to her own art. Her Pop Icons appeared for the first time in 1998. Two years later her Flower Year suite was exhibited in the Stockholm Spring Show at Liljevalch’s Gallery. These twelve female portraits were published in booklet form accompanied by Japanese haiku poetry interpreted by her father, Jan Vintilescu. It was his book that had first introduced this Japanese lyric form to a wider audience of Swedes in 1959. Since the exhibition at Liljevalchs in 2000, her Pop Icons have been exposed at galeries, art fairs and museums in Europe and elsewhere, like in Tokyo Art Factory in Japan, at Villa Tamaris-Centre d’art in la Seyne-sur-Mer and at SOMA Museum of modern Art in Seoul. In much the same way as the haiku moves us by the eloquence of its brevity, MariaManuela seeks through her pictures to convey situations, facial expressions and frames of mind by the most sparing and subtle of means. Her father had sought the same in rendering the haikus of the Japanese poet...
