About the Item

French/American b. Corsica, 1920 d. 2003 CHARLES LEVIER Charles Levier was a well-known and prolific Modernist painter of the mid-twentieth century.1 Born in Corsica in 1920, Levier showed early artistic promise, which led him to enroll at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris at the age of seventeen. There he cultivated his creative energy and technical skill, and developed a fascination with color and form. He befriended and was influenced by the artists Georges Rouault and André Lhôte. The artist’s education was halted, however, with the onset of World War II, during which he was called to serve in the French Army in North Africa, becoming a Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. After the war, Levier divided his time between living in the United States and in France. His artistic career finally took off in 1949, when he opened his first show at the Galerie Constantine in Lyons. This was followed quickly by an American debut in Los Angeles one year later. Exhibiting in galleries in Los Angeles, his work became sought after by many popular American celebrities including: Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Jackie Kennedy, Adlai Stevenson, and Baron Edmund de Rothschild. In 1955, Dr. Karl Lilienfeld, the owner of the famous Modernist art gallery Van Diemen-Lilienfeld, took notice of Levier’s work and began to exhibit the artist’s pictures in New York. The Van- Diemen-Lilienfeld approval was widely respected and the gallery’s endorsement of 1 Originally, the artist signed his works: Jean de Narbonne, Charles de Montfort, Maurice Verrier, Jacou, and Vallerois. By 1963, he had abandoned the use of the five noms d’artistes and was identified exclusively by his real name Charles Levier. Charles Levier appeared on the television program “To Tell the Truth” on October 28, 1963, on which he clarified his true name and the false identities of the other names. Levier’s work helped establish Charles Levier as a significant post-war, modernist artist. Charles Levier is most well known for his abstracted, post-Impressionistic still- lifes, cityscapes and female studies executed in a modernist European style, with an emphasis on Cubism. His expressionistic and dramatic work used color to suggest emotion and the artist worked in oil, watercolor, and later acrylic.
