About the Item

Chris Barnard Artist Statement January 2018 In my practice I wrestle with the politics of painting. In terms of a studio philosophy (or stance), I believe I cannot divorce who I am as an artist from who I am as a person, nor can my paintings be divorced from the questions with which I grapple. I’m constantly thinking about the world and its pressing problems, and then asking myself if and how responding through painting might prove interesting, relevant, or productive. This has been at the core of my work for the past 15 years. I rarely think solely about painting (or art, more broadly) and its histories; rather, like many others, I draw inspiration from across domains, disciplines, and discourses. While topical foci evolve, my enduring goal is to make work that resonates with people of varied backgrounds and expertise, and brings them into dialogue about pressing social and political issues. To address conceptual concerns, my paintings reflect various levels of representation. Some are tightly rendered and others are painted more loosely with abstract mark-making, saturated colors, and surreal, fictional and/or inverted imagery. Using space, color and texture, I draw attention to surface and substance: what is real, what is made up, and how media affect what we see and how we see it. In my work, imagery often vies for the viewer’s attention against paint’s material qualities—flat, slick, oily, drippy, washy, thick, chunky, matte, and so on. Likewise, intense colors battle their opposites. Often I am making paintings that are about conflict of some kind and making them in ways that reflect some internal struggle, where each aspect of a painting—i.e., imagery, materials, even my presence evidenced by composition or marks—works to assert itself and in so doing stimulates viewers to consider (and reconsider) associations. In my process I endeavor to find a synergy between conceptual inspiration, material exploration, and self-examination. My studio practice is ideas-driven and inquiry-based. Looking across all of my work, there are no singularly consistent formal properties, and yet I hope that viewers get a sense of my overarching commitment to acknowledging my influences and celebrating my visceral proclivities, while problematizing them, too. Additionally, in a recurring fashion over nearly two decades of painting, a work in one series can act as a seed for the next; similarly, formal attributes from one series reappear in another several years later. In this way, I sometimes equate my trajectory to a kind of orbit, where I come back around to particular methods, formal properties, or ideas, as inspired.
