Flanking figures follow in close succession, their mounts stretched in energetic gallop, while a small pack of hounds can be glimpsed in the distance, driving the chase forward across the rolling landscape. The composition is particularly successful in its sense of immediacy and forward motion. The diagonal sweep of the foreground hedge draws the eye across the picture plane, enhancing the dynamism of the riders and lending a pleasing depth to the scene. The artist employs confident, economical brushwork—especially in the handling of the horses—suggesting familiarity with sporting subjects and an understanding of equine movement.
