Eno Bassey Yearn For Freedom, 2022 Acrylic on canvas 40 × 36 in 101.6 × 91.4 cm Eno Bassey—A Brief Note on Her Work Eno Bassey is a Nigerian painter living and working in Ogun State, Nigeria. Her works are figurative paintings that achieve their appeal through brilliant colors and straightforward themes. Her paintings often portray a child running, engaging in some other physical activity, or trying to overcome an obstacle. Perseverance, strength, hope, and triumph are the themes that undergird her work. Her canvases typically feature one central figure painted in a near-realist fashion. Around the figure are the other components that make up the background: landscape, grass, tracks, all of which are made flat or painted in a way that emphasizes the central character. It's a composition with little fuzz, almost minimalist. Eno's greatest strength, however, lies in her facility with color. Her paintings of clouds and skies are impressively done, with the blues, greys and white working together in fine balance. When she paints shorts, gowns and blouses, she pays each crease and shines such attention and care that the fabrics offer a delight that is all their own. Fields are a lush green, lit with the radiance of flowers. It is interesting that in her paintings, the figures hold tiny clocks suspended on strings. This troubles the reading of the paintings. Why are there clocks in the painting? The mood and composition of the canvases incline one to think of them as having a positive or inspirational message, something along the lines of "If you persevere, you will not run out of time before you gain victory."This may very well be the case, but the presence of clocks in paintings always leave worrying associations of mortality and the running out of time. Maybe this is the point. Maybe their presence was never meant to resolve into any easy meaning.
