Eugenio De Blasi
PERSEO AND ANDROMEDA- In the Manner of A.R. Mengs- Italy- Figurative Painting

2005

About the Item

Perseo and Andromeda - Oil on canvas cm.120x80, Eugenio De Blasi, Italy, 2005. Gold gilded wooden frame available on request This is his reinterpretation of a large ancient painting "Perseus and Andromeda" by the German painter Anton Raphael Mengs. Mengs' production is linked to the fundamental principles of neoclassicism. Not surprisingly, his works are characterized by very balanced and symmetrical compositions, a clear drawing and a palette made up of very bright and lively colors, in contrast to the soft colors of Rococo. With these characteristics Mengs tended to reach a state of "sublime beauty", shared by other classicist painters residing in Rome in the seventeenth century, such as Andrea Sacchi and Nicolas Poussin. [ The work was inspired by a cameo that belonged to his wife and which is now kept in the Hermitage where the painting is also exhibited. The theme is taken from the myth of Perseus and Andromeda, precisely the moment of the scene with Perseus who has already freed Andromeda from the terrifying monster, who lies lifeless on the ground, and is bringing her to safety, thanks also to the help of the winged horse Pegasus.

Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1800, no. 93 What was happening in British history painting in around 1800? In recent discussions of the emergence of a British School of history painting following the foundation of the Royal Academy in 1768, this is a question which is rarely posed and one which is not easily answered. Examination of surviving Royal Academy exhibition catalogues reveals a profusion of artists’ names and titles, few of which remain immediately recognizable, whilst endeavours to explain the impact of exhibition culture on painting - such as the 2001 Courtauld show Art on the Line - have tended to focus on the first and second generation of Royal Academician, rather than young or aspiring artists in the early nineteenth century. This makes the discovery and identification of the work under discussion of exceptional importance in making sense of currents in English painting around 1800. Executed by Edward Dayes...

The painting by Giovanni Battista Spinelli (c.1597 - 1647?), an Italian painter, depicts Jacob’s dream. Giovanni Battista Spinelli was active during the mid-17th century mainly in Naples. His works can be found in private collections, and some are at the Uffizi and at the National Gallery, London. This painting can be dated around 1655. Even though Spinelli’s canvases might be difficult to date, they are of uneven quality. The painting depicts Jacob in a deep sleep while he is surrounded by dark and threatening clouds, but a ladder of light, where angels are ascending and descending, appears in his dream.
